This stater is an unique specimen, in fact, we don’t known other examples with both the same orientation of Athena’s head and Pegasos but also with this position of legend and of triskeles. The coins, also, falls int he first phase of production of staters by Agathokles because the weight is among 8,2 and 8,5 g, following still the Corinthian system. About the 305 BC, instead, we notice a reduction of the weight of staters at c. 7 g.

AΘE, owl standing r.; at l. olive twig, all within incuse square. SNG Copenhagen 41-43. Old cabinet tone. Excellent conservation, very little sign at h 4 on obverse. Extremely fine. The specimen falls, perhaps, in last phases of production of olf Athenian tipology. We notice, on obverce, the hair on Athena’s forehead loses its wave meanwhile the palmette reduces its dimension and it doesn’t touch the ear. The owl, on reverse, becames thin and more vertical than before. Nonetheless the weight is costant in time, demonstrating the importance of Athenisn coin inside commercial trades, accepted both because it was recognized for the same tipology and because the same amount of metal during the time .
