A Pair of Early 19th Century Flintlock Pistols by J Laugher, Birmingham, each with 17cm brass two stage swamped barrel, octagonal at the breech, the box lock signed on one side, and with a martial trophy to the opposing side, steel cock and frizzen cover, the steel sliding trigger guard securing the under-hinged sprung bayonet, with walnut slab butt and a bone tipped ramrod with screw to one side of the barrel.
A Good 18th Century Flintlock Silver Mounted Musketoon/Coaching Carbine by Griffin & Tow, London, the 60cm browned steel swamped barrel signed on the rib, with London proof marks, Board of Ordnance marks and gold lined touch hole, with foliate chased and engraved tang, the lock plate signed and engraved with leaves, slide safety, the the well figured walnut full stock with silver furniture of two ramrod pipes, foliate engraved trigger guard with acorn finial, butt plate with engraved tang, vacant escutcheon and side plate worked as a martial trophy, with hallmarks for London 1773, maker`s mark I.K (possibly for John King), and with a horn tipped wood ramrod, 100cm long overall.
[Horse racing interest] A Victorian silver twin handled pedestal trophy cup and cover by Walker & Hall (John Edward Bingham) , Sheffield 1888, incused stamped by Walker & Hall (‘W&H’ on a flag), the finial modelled as a horse with jockey up, a domed moulded cover, moulded high loop handles, embossed with foliage and scroll-work, the front reserve presentation engraved ‘The Paddy Butler Memorial Cup’, the reverse with a jumping scene, on a tapered stem and a circular foot, 45cm (17.5in) high, 1660g (53.35 oz); with an ebonised socle (the base of the stem almost split through at the foot)
A pair of Edwardian silver small trophy cups, each with flying scroll handles and reeded decoration, on a circular foot, London 1902, together with a George V silver mounted perfume bottle and stopper, with pierced lattice and engraved foliate decoration, Birmingham 1913, a plated sugar caster, a plated sauceboat, and two plated bowls.
HAWKER HARRY: (1889-1921) Australian Pioneer Aviator, co-founder of Hawker Aircraft. Rare A.Q.S., H G Hawker, on one side of a printed correspondence card (bearing the address of the Lee collectors of Reading), Brooklands, 3rd November 1912. In dark fountain pen ink the aviator has written, in full, `The wealth of the ocean was fractions below the aeroplane that sparkles above`. Some light overall age toning and minor staining, G In the month before penning this statement, Hawker had won the Michelin Trophy for flight endurance (8 hours 23 minutes, October 1912).
PIXTON C. HOWARD: (1885-1972) British Aviator, winner of the Schneider Trophy air race, 1914. Pixton became the first test pilot for Avro and is reputed to have flown the first fare paying passengers. Dark fountain pen ink signature (`C. Howard Pixton`) on a printed correspondence card bearing the address of the Lee collectors of Reading. Dated in Pixton`s hand Amesbury, 17th February 1913. Some very light, minor discoloration to the card, only slightly affecting the signature. About VG
BERNARDI MARIO DE: (1893-1959) Italian Fighter Ace of World War I, later a Test Pilot and World Air Speed Record holder, 1928. Bernardi won the Schneider Trophy in 1926. Bold blue ink signature (`Comte. Mario de Bernardi`) on an unused air mail envelope, dated Cleveland, 8th September 1931 in his hand. Together with Fiorenza de Bernardi (Italy`s first female airline pilot, 1967) A.L.S., Fiorenza de Bernardi, one page, 8vo, n.p., 17th March 1967, to the autograph collector Roland Sensini, in Italian.
