†A 1796 pattern light cavalry officer’s sword, curved, shallow fullered blade 32½”, etched on one side with crown, GR cypher and mounted light dragoon, and on the other side with pre 1801 Royal Arms and supporters, and trophy of weapons, all interspersed with floral flourishes, regulation steel stirrup hilt with langets, plain forward sloping pommel and backstrap, wirebound leather grip (replaced), with buff sword knot, in its steel scabbard (cleaned over pitting) with 2 rings. Good Condition, the blade retaining faint traces of original gilt. Plate 40 £350-450

A rare mid 18th century French officer’s sword with folding triple bar hilt, straight single edged blade 31½”, with triple fullers along the back edge, etched on both sides in panels at forte with maker’s logo “De La Fabrique de la Marque au Raisin à Solingen” with devices, and along the blade on one side the crowned Royal Arms of France on a trophy of arms and instruments, and on the other side in large bold ornate capitals “Vive Le Roi”, steel hilt with open heart shaped guard and scalloped edge knucklebow along which are 2 closely fitting sidebars which open out and clip to the guard (one clip missing) to form an open “basket” type hilt, plain pommel, simulated wirebound grip. Very Good Condition for age with a pleasing patina. Plate 35

A scarce Volunteer officer’s .65" Baker type flintlock rifle, by Fenton, London, 46½” overall, octagonal twist barrel 30¼” with London proofs, engraved “R Fenton-London” and with 2 folding leaf rearsights, the breech plug with silver line and maker’s poincon, muzzle with bayonet bar on the right side, flat stepped lock with safety bolt, rainproof pan and roller on frizzen spring, plate engraved with small floral bouquets, sunburst and “Fenton”, walnut fullstock with chequered wrist, cheekpiece and engraved brass mounts including butt trap cover with fern tip border and trophy of arms, facetted butt plate tang, and square back trigger guard, with metal socket behind the breech tang for free standing aperture sight, sling swivels and a brass mounted wooden ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition (light pitting to barrel, traces of repaired fracture to stock, small spliced repairs to fore end with replacement fore end cap). Plate 59

A 1796 pattern light cavalry officer’s sword, dated 1798, broad curved shallow fullered blade 32½”, marked “Osborn’s Warranted 1798” at forte, and etched on one side with trophy of arms, crowned GR cypher, pre 1801 Royal Arms with supporters and motto, and GB (Owner’s ?) cypher, and on the other side with motto scrolls “Ducit Amor Patriae”, LLVC monogram (Loyal Lincoln, Loyal Leicester ?), wand of Aesculapius with mace and dividers, and a standing female figure holding a winged hand, steel stirrup hilt with langets, plain facetted backstrap and lower band to wirebound leather grip. In its steel scabbard with 2 rings. Good Condition (contemporary repairs to top of knucklebow). Plate 42 £350-500

A most interesting English made American style dirk named to an Ensign of The 89th Regiment and evidently associated with that regiments part in the American War of 1812-14, curved blade 13", double edged at point and etched for three quarters of its length with foliate panels, on one side incorporating trophy of drum, polearms and flags, and on the other cannon, shield and polearms, copper gilt hilt, the crossguard in the form of an entwined serpent, chain link guard (replaced), American eagle head pommel and backstrap, finely diced ivory grip, in its black leather sheath with copper gilt locket, middle band and chape, all nicely engraved with lined, foliate panels, the locket also incorporating a trophy of flags and spears with Union flag in oval, and also engraved at the top “Ensign Johnson 89th Regt”, the chape incorporating a shield on trophy of flags, maker’s name on back of locket “Salter, sword cutler to HRH the Duke of Sussex, 35 Strand”, 2 suspension rings. Good Condition, the hilt retaining approximately 20% gilt, the scabbard mounts approximately 80% (hilt and scabbard locket a little loose). Plate 41

An unusual 1796 pattern sword for an Irish light cavalry officer, curved, shallow fullered blade 30”, with spear point, by J Read, Dublin, etched on one side with crown, Irish harp and trophy, and on the other with standing Britannia and trophy, both sides surmounted by a foliate bonnet device, gilt stirrup hilt with rounded triangular langets each bearing a prominent applied lion’s head, facetted knucklebow, lion’s head pommel and facetted backstrap, wirebound leather grip, in its black leather scabbard with gilt brass locket, middle band and chape with 2 rings, the locket engraved I. Read, College Green. Very Good Condition, the blade retaining approximately 70% blueing and gilding, the hilt 80% gilt, and the scabbard mounts 20% gilt. Holderness Hunt - a silver two handled presentation trophy cup, by Walker & Hall, Sheffield 1922, of urn form with upswept handles with stylised horses head mounts, raised on a knopped pedestal base, to a mahogany plinth, height 35 cm, weight 52 oz Provenance; by family descent. Inscribed "Holderness Hunt Point to Point, March 20th 1924, Farmers Race, Presented to the winner by Capt. J. Harrison - Broadley, M.F.H." Sold with photographs depicting the owner, the cup, the horse and the jockey. The winner of the race was Lissett III, raised by the Wright family of Nafferton, following his success in this race he was sold to Lord Grimthorpe, and was entered into the Foxhunters Chase at Aintree, falling at the Canal Bridge turn on the second time around. Capt J.Harrison - Broadley was the Master of Foxhounds for the Hunt.
