[ Victoria Cross ] A deactivated Imperial German Kaiserliche Marine U Boat flare pistol by Stantien & Becker of Lubeck, dated 1915, serial number 1280, the barrel stamped Congreve, together with a signed photograph of William La Touche Congreve, VC, DSO, MC (1891 - 1916) and a biography. [This pistol was the property of Major "Billy" La Touche Congreve, Rifle Brigade, believed to have been a trophy of his brother, Sub Lieutenant, later Commander Sir Geoffrey Congreve DSO, Royal Navy, and gifted to his brother. An accompanying record of provenance states "This Very pistol was used in the First World War as part of the personal kit of Major William La Touche Congreve VC. As Brigade-major to the 76th Brigade Major Congreve used this Very pistol on many occasions to illuminate the battlefields of France to locate the enemy movements. When he was killed by a sniper's bullet on the 20th July 1916, the Very pistol was handed to his father, general Sir Walter Norris Congreve VC, commanding XIII Corps. The General, who kept it in memory of his gallant son, brought the pistol home after the war. It was later given to the vendor by Major Christopher Congreve, youngest son of General Congreve". The lot includes a letter of provenance from the latter.]
dating: about 1780 provenance: France, Very large, curved, single-and-false-edged blade with wide central fuller and deep groove on the back, finely engraved and gilded base on a blue background with a cartouche of cornucopias and floral motifs and below a large crown and rays, featuring the sun in the center, below a spear crossed with a trumpet, a trophy of flags on the other side with a central pandur's head among cartouches with floral motifs. Bronze, one-quillon hilt with traces of gilding, langets and long, smooth cap outlined at the edges. With wooden grip covered with leather and with embossed brass mounts with floral motifs and convex, curved stripes. Two suspension rings. Very rare. length 90.2 cm.
dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: Duchy of Parma, Straight, single-and-false-edged blade with wide fuller at the center, the first part engraved and gilded on a blue background with bird with snake, laurel wreath, trophy, flower and breast-plate on both sides, tang. Bronze hilt with remains of gilding, partially decorated with floral motifs in high relief. Metal wire binding grip. Complete with leather scabbard with gilded brass mounts and fine engravings, the one at the centre with a rich trophy, cap, and chape with laurel fraud. Two suspension rings. Rare in this beautiful decorated version. length 104.5 cm.
dating: about 1855 provenance: Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Straight, slightly shortened, single-and short-false-edged blade with double groove and mark of the Mongiana factory on the tang. Fine bronze hilt with remains of gilding, five loop-guards partially engraved with floral motifs in bas-relief, half cap with beautiful trophy in bas-relief. Iron scabbard (damaged by rust) with two bands engraved with floral motifs and with suspension ring. length 91 cm.
dating: 20th Century provenance: USA, Curved, single-edged blade with grooves, engraved with 'UNITED STATES MARINES' inscription, American shields and floral motifs, marked 'USMC SERIAL No. 323' on the back; brass hilt with cross-shaped quillon and bone scales (or a substitute material), brass rivets, the ones at the front with enameled stars. Wooden scabbard covered with fish skin and mounts and gilded bronze suspension rings, decorated with Neptune, trophy and floral motifs in high relief. length 85.8 cm.
dating: Early 19th Century provenance: France, Double-edged blade of hexagonal section decorated with golden engravings on blue background with trophies and floral motifs for over two third of the entire length. Gilded brass hilt richly ornated in high and bas-relief with a trophy among oak and bay leaves on shell-guard, lion's head in the middle of the loop-guard, an earlier warrior's bust under the pommel decorated with floral motifs, general's star on the opposite side. Grooved, mother-of-pearl grip scales, horizontally cracked at the rear. Leather scabbard with brass mounts, gilded and decorated with floral motifs. Rare. length 89 cm.
dating: 1815 - 1820 circa provenance: Piedmont, Blade of triangular section with hollow faces, engraved and gilded on blue background with trophies and floral motifs at the first part. Gilded bronze beautiful scabbard (small abrasions), shell-guard with Medusa's heads in bas-relief between two winged lions and a snake in high relief under floral decorations. Quillon and loop-guard decorated with floral motifs in bas-relief, pommel shaped as a heroic helmet. Checkered horn grip grooved with staves on the corners, central trophy feauturing the Savoy's cross at the front. Wooden scabbard covered with reptile skin (small damage and missing parts) and with gilded bronze mounts engraved with rocaille. Two suspension rings. Probably the small sword belonged to a Piedmontese artillery general as shown by the Savoy's cross on the grip and the Medusa's head on the shell-guard. length 85 cm.
dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Straight, double-edged blade of hexagonal section, bearing at the forte small floral and trophy engravings with gold inlaid on a blue background, some areas with rust damage; hilt made of bronze gilt with mercury, sword-shell shaped as a heart with engraved frames, quillon with center of crossguard in relief, pommel shaped as a helmet with crest, bronze grip engraved to imitate the wire binding. Complete with sword knot and leather scabbard (heavy signs of wear) with gilt brass mounts. Rare. length 95 cm.

dating: Early 19th Century provenance: England, Smoothbore, two stage barrel, the first part octagonal and with marks of the Birmingham test bench and the mark 'R / I&W', then round with rings and floral engravings at the girdle. Bell-mouthed nozzle, with moulded muzzle. A snap bayonet with iron triangular blade assembled above the barrel. Sliding locking mechanism, assembled above the tang of the barrel. Lock provided with external secure lock, signature 'Richards' and 'J&W', and provided with sealed pan and big antifriction wheel. Smooth, wooden full stock. Brass mounts. Butt-plate with carved trophy, trigger guard with flower and acorn. Iron tipped, horn ramrod. For Joseph & William Richards see 'Der Neue Stoeckel', vol. 2 page 1040. With their address in Birmingham (49 New St.), where they worked together from 1799 to 1817. The page also features the same mark as the one on the gun. length 76 cm.
dating: 1736 provenance: Madrid, Flat plate, with oblique borders, engraved with a small frame. Tang with an engraving depicting a trophy with bow and arrows and marked 'FERNANDEZ'. The central area with the crowned, gold-inlaid stamp 'JV / FER / NAN / DEZ', below the writing 'MA...' (the rest is not clearly legible) and dated '1736'. Rein ah hammer's throw with remains of leaf-shaped engravings on a granulated background. Dents, the upper jaw and the clamp's screw are missing, the spring of the batterie with missing parts. Moulded springs, pan and batterie engraved en suite. An element with floral engravings at the back. Juan Fernandez from Madrid (1711-1739 circa) becomes Master between 1700 and 1710. Court gunsmith under Philip V of Spain. See 'Der Neue Stoeckel', vol. 1, page 365; also his stamp is reproduces (n. 369, same page). length plate 12,6 cm.
dating: 18th/19th Century provenance: Turkey, Round, smoothbore, 16.5 mm cal barrel with octagonal base, flat back marked 'LONDON' and with other marks including the St. Etienne (?) mark. Tang with hollow sight and engravings. Lock signed 'Wilson'. Working mechanism, but the cock staggers and the mechanism is with single snap. The hammer throw with relieved trophy. Wooden stock. White metal (silver?) mounts, the butt-plate with remains of trophies in relief and stamp 'E' under crown; repaired tangs. Counter-plate with a trophy of flags and half moon surrounded by rays and a restored segment. Half moon on rays also on the trigger guard. Two smooth and long barrel brackets featuring remains of engravings, typical fake ramrod. An European pistol for the exportation market or a war prize? length 40 cm.
dating: late 18th Century provenance: Eastern Europe, Flat, triangular, single-and short false-edged blade, shaped as a 'T' on the back, engraved with sun, baldachin halfmoon, Cabbalistic symbols, Pandur's head, trophy decorated with arabesques at the base, tang with remains of gilding. Brass hilt with acorn-shaped quillons, wooden grip (crackings) with brass rivets. Complete of leather scabbard (small missing parts) and brass mounts (missing hook). Rare. length 71.7 cm.

dating: Early 19th Century provenance: London, Round, smoothbore, brass, 11 mm cal. barrel, divided by rings, with moulded nozzle, turn-off; single-piece frame with the barrel signed 'CLAKSON' and 'LONDON' on a trophy and floral motifs, below various marks and among them the mark of the test bench of London. Wooden butt decorated with filigree floral motifs (missing parts). Iron trigger guard slightly engraved, embossed silver butt-plate with rampant lion on a trophy. length 21 cm.
dating: late 18th Century provenance: England, Cylindrical, turn-off, 11 mm cal. barrels with remains of engraved frames at the nozzle. Boxlock-type, iron frame decorated with lines and small ornaments shaped as leaves and flowers. On the left side a trophy with an elliptical cartouche containing the 'Nicholson' signature, on the right side a different cartouche decorated with garlands featuring the inscription 'Corn=Hill / London'. The batterie at the back, vent selector for the pan on the left side, working. Cock at the back provided with external safety lock, foldaway trigger. Working mechanism (the trigger tends to drop). Pitting. Wooden butt with beautiful inlaid spirals and rocaille. For William Nicholson (about 1783-1794) see 'Der Neue Stoeckel', vol. 2 pag. 870. It is documented in London, the seat was located in Corn-Hill in 1789-1794. length 20,5 cm.
dating: Mid 19th Century provenance: London, Octagonal, smoothbore, 16 mm cal. barrel with two golden frames at the base, slightly refreshed browning, foresight; engraved tang provided with rear sight. Forward spring lock engraved with a trophy and floral motifs signed 'D.EGG' (HENRY DURS EGG). Wooden half stock micro-checkered at the base. Iron mounts, trigger guard engraved en suite. Lock and trigger guard with pitting. Trigger with sensitizer. Wooden ramrod with brass cartridge extractors. length 39.5 cm.
dating: Mid 18th Century provenance: Austria, Straight, double-edged blade of lenticular section, with some pitting and featuring a beautiful engraving with a double-headed crowned eagle surmounted by the motto 'vivat' at the forte on the right side, the writing 'No. 14' below. On the left side two decorations with intertwined bands and a fine trophy with cannon, drums, spears and flags. Brass hilt with thin langets. Quillon with guard liked to the pommel and big, shell-shaped valve featuring an engraved monogram at the inside. Long and smooth cap, with button at the top. Grip with leather covering. length 102 cm.
