[Horse Racing Interest] A 19th century Belgian silver trophy `Prix Royal`, maker`s mark illegible, .800 standard, large article hallmark for 1831-1868, the shaped circular dish cast with a crowned `L`, four horse racing scenes in reserves and with two handles centred by masks, the knopped stem with four horse`s heads in relief, on a shaped circular base with foliate supports, engraved `PRIX ROYAL` and `J. B. Lees Joaillier de L. L. M. M. Bruxelles`, 34.5cm (13.5in) wide, 28.5cm (11.25in) high, 3733g (120 oz) (including iron rod with nut). The crowned `L` here would appear to refer to Leopold I (1790-1865), king of the Belgians, and was, perhaps, a royal presentation piece. Visit www.dnfa.com for condition reports.
