Fellows had discovered the ruins of Xanthus, the ancient capital of Lycia, on his first expedition to Asia Minor in 1838. His account of his discoveries (see previous lot) generated great excitement in England and on behalf of the British Museum, a firman was requested from the sultan to export some of the Lycian treasures to England. As a result seventy-eight packing cases of sculptures were exported to the British Museum in 1842.Baron Behr was an important collector of coins who donated part of his collection to the British Museum.

Samuel Marti a French white marble and ormolu clock garniture, early 20th century, the 8-day clock in an architectural case with triumphal military trophy surmount above a dial marked in Arabic numerals and decorated with swags of flowers and marked "Comptoir General."Accompanied by a pair of matching two sconce candelabra each mounted with a flaming quiver of arrows motif on corresponding white marble bases with toupee feet. 18 cm wide x 34 cm high x 12 cm deep (the clock)Qty: 3Private collectionCondition report: The bodies of the clock and accompanying candelabra are good without cracksThe clock is complete with a pendulum and key the retaining nut for the bell has dropped inside the body of the clock when the bell was removed to see the maker's name.The going and the chiming train wind and go through the motions of escaping and striking when the hands are moved to the hour positionsThe dial has some fine cracks to the top section at around 11.00 oclcok.Note the fact that the movement runs is NO guarantee of accuracy or reliability but the clock came from a private residence and I can only assume it would have been working whilst there.

The clock supported on the backs of a pair of putti, the dial marked in Arabic numerals and decorated with swagged garlands below an amatory trophy mounted on a rectangular base with toupe feet, accompanied by a pair of matching swag draped urn form pastile burners on corresponding white marble bases. 26 cm wide x 35 cm high (the clock)Condition report: The bodies of the clock are good without chips or cracks, I can see some quite good replacement brass beaded moulding around the base.The dial is good and bright and looks to be intact but it moves slightly when touched, perhaps the solder fixing has come looseThe clock comes with a pendulum and (a) key. The spring steel pendulum suspension is slightly twisted.I have wound both trains and one had very little travel and the other a little more, I set the pendulum in motion but it stopped soon after, this could be because of the twistI tried advancing the hands to see if I could get the chiming train to activate but it remained unresponsive.In brief, the clock is in good decorative order but will require mechanical work to make good

AN IMPORTANT GEORGIAN PRESENTATION MAMELUKE OF CHARLES WILLIAM VANE-STEWART, 80.5cm sharply curved trophy kilij blade with gold koftgari signature panels and highlights, gilt hilt, the crossguard with cross-hatch decoration and chiselled with scrolling foliage and flowerheads, the backstrap chased and decorated with geometric designs, rose head riveted mother-o'-pearl grips, chain guard mounts, contained in its copper gilt mounted leather wrapped wooden scabbard, decorated with geometric designs and scrolling foliage, further applied with a presentation plaque, Presented by C. W. Vane Marquis of Londonderry GCB GCH BE GRS STGeo TO His Nephew Captn D. Wood RA ANNO 1847. Charles William Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry first saw active service in the French Revolutionary wars as a young Lieutenant in 1794. He further served with distinction in the Peninsular Wars as a Cavalry Commander during the Corunna campaign with Paget and later as Wellington's Adjutant took part in the Battle of Talavera. Vane is famously depicted in a Portrait, now in the National Portrait Gallery and shown here, in which this Mameluke is slung over his shoulder. Three rivets lacking from one side of the grip, which is also cracked.

A RARE FRENCH 1ST EMPIRE SABRE D'OFFICIER SUPERIEUR DE CARABINIERS ADAPTED FOR USE BY A BRITISH OFFICER, 83cm sharply curved fullered blade with clipped back tip, etched damascus pattern along its entire length and etched to either side with a panel with English imagery in the Klingenthal style, to include mythical beasts, laurel wreath, a Mesopotamian staff, the club of Hercules, GR cypher, crowned Royal arms and makers' panels for CF for Coulaux Freres and Tatham et Egg, further etched Klingenthal on the back edge, regulation copper gilt hilt pierced with the Imperial Napoleonic crown, the white metal orb, flaming grenade and monogram N now removed, lion's mask pommel, wire bound leather grip, contained in its gilt brass mounted steel scabbard. Presumably a trophy sword re-bladed at Klingenthal by a British officer during the occupation of 1815-1818. See Gazette des Armes, The Armourer, and Man at Arms for articles discussing this and similar swords with English decorated Klingenthal blades.

Ballantyne In Recognition of His Meritorious Services In Saving Life at the Disastrous Fire In The Canongate, October 9th 1867”, the reverse engraved with the Arms of the City of Edinburgh, makers mark: A.M. & Co.; together with a silver-plated tennis trophy beaker won by J.G. Ballantyne in 1900. THE CANONGATE FIRE: On the 9th October 1867, a fire broke out at the premises of fireworks maker Thomas Hammond in Chessels Court, Cannongate, resulting in five fatalities.
