Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Nazca 5 Phase, ca. 125 to 250 CE. One of the most outstanding representations of the Masked Mythical Being (Anthropomorphic Mythical Being) finely painted in a wide variety of colors - red, orange, tan, grey, black, and white hues. It is depicted with a characteristic feline head with a headband holding several trophy heads. His mouth mask is shown with lateral elements in the form of cat whiskers which also appear to be stylized trophy heads. He also dons an impressive necklace or chin strap comprised of several miniature trophy heads. While the Nazca did not leave written records explaining this mythical being, several appear to be associated with trophy heads and others with agricultural functions. A well-executed example! Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 250 to 540 CE. A tall polychrome head jar or kero, the lower section painted to represent a trophy head presenting a dramatic visage comprised of stylized black hair, almond-shaped eyes, red circular motifs (perhaps representing rosy cheeks or possibly tears) just beneath the eyes, and a closed mouth flanked by mustachios and a chin beard. He wears a serpent-shaped headband and elaborate ear ornaments. Size: 4.625" in diameter x 5.75" H (11.7 cm x 14.6 cm)But that's not all! The iconographical program of this piece continues on the tall neck of the vase. This cylindrical section above the head is adorned with a wide register of repeated, interlocking trophy head deities or tasters, the tongue of one joining the brow of the next, giving the appearance of a string of bizarre beads. Above this section, just beneath the rim, is a narrower band of step motifs, another hallmark of Nazca iconography. An impressive example of an elegant form with a finely painted polychrome finish in rich red, white, cream, brown, grey, and black hues.
