Original colour wrappers c/w cellophane sleeve and custom made slip case. Some staple rust otherwise (VG). Note: The 1931 contest was won by GB for the third time (uncontested) and the trophy was permanently awarded to Great Britain – the event was originally introduced in 1912 by Jack Schneider a French industrial manager, licensed plane and balloon pilot and who, for a long time, held the balloon altitude record. In 1912 acting as a race referee at Monaco he noticed that seaplane design was lagging far behind other aircraft. Since sea planes promised to be the best solution for long range passenger service Mr Schneider thought that seaplane race would allow these aircraft to improve more quickly. On December 5, 1912 he offered a trophy for a seaplane race and proposed a course of at least 150 nautical miles. The trophy was a work of art costing fr.25000 and the Aero club winning three races in five years would retain the cup and the winning pilot would receive fr.75,000. Each new edition of the race was to be hosted by the previous winning country and these events attracted crowds in excess of 250000 spectators proving a keen public interest in this type of competition.
