Lot 104

Naval General Service 1793-1840, 2 clasps, Martinique, Guadaloupe (Chas. Haydon, Master’s Mate.) the second clasp re-soldered to side-carriage, otherwise very fine £3,000-£3,600 --- Provenance: Sotheby, November 1986. Charles Haydon is confirmed on the rolls as Master’s Mate aboard H.M.S. Cherub for Martinique, and in the same rate aboard H.M.S. Pompée for Guadaloupe. Charles Haydon was born near Axminster, Devon, on 30 June 1793, and entered the Royal Navy as a First Class Volunteer aboard the Northumberland in October 1803. He remained in this ship for nearly two years and accompanied Lord Nelson’s Squadron during its famous pursuit of the combined Fleets. He was next appointed to the Ramillies and in this ship he witnessed, as Midshipman, the capture of the Marengo and the 40 gun frigate Belle Poule. Transferred to the Epervier in 1807, he saw a good deal of boat service and assisted in the reduction of the islands of St. Thomas and Ste. Croix. Between 1808-09, he served as Master’s Mate and Acting Lieutenant of the Cherub, and during that short period of time he contributed to the cutting-out of an American sloop which was protected by a heavy fire from the enemy’s batteries at Martinique, and further participated in the shore based operations at the capture of that island. He was also present in the Cherub’s yawl during an attempt to annihilate the French frigates Furieuse and Felicité in May 1809. On leaving Cherub, in which ship his services had been marked by a ‘very conspicuous degree of gallantry, zeal and energy’, he became successively Master’s Mate of the Neptune and Pompée. In December 1809, he shared in the destruction of the 40-gun frigates Loire and Seine, which were moored in Anse La Barque and defended by numerous batteries, but soon afterwards returned to England due to ill-health. Upon his return he was promoted to Lieutenant, 28 December 1810, and, almost immediately, sailed in the Stately for Cadiz, where, with a view to assisting in its defence, he joined the flotilla and was for nearly two years incessantly employed in a gun-boat. During that period he frequently landed for the purpose of storming the enemy’s batteries, under whose immediate fire he appears to have been not less than 16 times personally in action. For many days at a time he was compelled to subsist upon raw salt meat but clearly this did little to curb his activities, for on one occasion he was instrumental to the embarkation of a Spanish mortar which was eventually brought home as a trophy from the siege of Cadiz, 1810-12. This ‘imposing of all war trophies’ was originally displayed in St. James’s Park and quickly found itself a popular attraction with the sobriquet of ‘The Prince Regent’s Mortar’. It now stands at Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall. In December 1812, he proceeded to the Mediterranean in the Barfleur, and held successive appointments in this theatre aboard the Tremendous, Prince of Wales and Guadeloupe, and was present at the reduction of Genoa in the latter vessel. In June 1815, he joined the Cephalus and in this ship was employed in co-operation with the Royalists on the coast of France and up the Gironde. In 1818 he joined his last sea-going appointment, the Carron, and in this vessel sailed for the East Indies, escorting en route Sir Ralph Darling (Governor of Mauritius), and continued to serve on the that station until wrecked in the Bay of Bengal, and with difficulty saved on 6 July 1820. He then, after encountering many perils, returned to England and was placed on half pay. He was promoted to Commander on the Retired List on 28 June 1851, and died in 1866.

BRAMBLE PATTERN GOLF BALL AUTOGRAPHED BY THE WORLD FAMOUS PIONEER GOLFER HARRY VARDON by St Mungo Manufacturing Co. marked to the poles 'The Colonel', ink signed 'Harry Vardon' with date inscribed as 'March 3rd 1909' and with inscribed scores of three rounds at believed Radyr Golf Club, Cardiff, '1st 67, 2nd 6, 3rd 67' Provenance: presented to Mrs Franklin Thomas, Lady Captain of Radyr, Cardiff in 1909 and by descent, two newspaper cuttings Auctioneer's Note: Harry Vardon (1870-1937) played at Radyr in mid-Summer of 1903 with the other two most famous golfers of the time, James Braid and John Henry Taylor, who made up the 'Great Triumvirate'. Harry Vardon, originally from Jersey, was Open Champion six times between 1896 and 1914, and also US Open Champion in 1900. Vardon was responsible for popularising the grip which is now almost universally used by golfers of all standards and was the first professional golfer to play in knickerbockers - discarding the proper' dress of an Englishman in an uncomfortable shirt and tie with a buttoned jacket. Later he became a golf course architect, designing several courses in Britain including Llandrindod Wells, Woodhall Spa and Radcliffe-on-Trent. The PGA of America created the Vardon Trophy, now awarded annually to the player on the PGA Tour with the year's lowest adjusted scoring average and the British PGA created the Harry Vardon Trophy which now serves as the award for the winner of the European Tour's Race to Dubai. Vardon's 1903 visit to Radyr is well described in 'Playing Through Time - 100 Years of Golf at Radyr 1902-2002' by Ron Jones (2002). The other recorded visit from Vardon was in 1908 when he and James Braid played a second exhibition match at the Club. But the date of March 3rd 1909 on the ball is somewhat of a mystery, but it is not inconceivable that Vardon revisited the course in 1909 or came for a social visit and recalled his score from the previous year. Comments: ball in good condition, wear to ink marks

Lot 1745

SOUTHERN SCOTTISH LEAGUE EMERGENCY CUP 1940/41,awarded to James 'Scot' Symon of Rangers F.C., in sterling silver, hallmarked for Birmingham 1940, the cover with footballer finial, the twin handled cup inscribed 'SCOTTISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION WAR CHALLENGE CUP', on a circular socle base mounted with shield shaped plaque inscribed 'SOUTHERN SCOTTISH LEAGUE EMERGENCY CUP COMPETITION 1940-41 WON BY RANGERS F.C J.S. SYMON', 24cm highNote: This rare and important piece of Scottish footballing history comes from a period of turbulence for the country. Due to the outbreak of World War II, all normal competitions were suspended, with a number of regional tournaments having been set up in their place. Therefore, whilst both the Scottish Football League and Scottish League Cup were no longer contested, the Southern Football League and Southern Football League Cup were held in an unofficial capacity. These were played at a time of unrelenting dominance for Rangers Football Club, them not having gone more than a year without lifting a major trophy since 1917. Indeed, during the so-called 'unofficial' years, the team won all six Southern League titles, as well as four of the six Southern League Cups (losing the other two in the final - one of which was cruelly snatched from them when the game ended in a draw, the winner being decided on who had been awarded the most corners). The trophy offered at McTear's relates to the very first of those Southern League Cup tournaments, dating from 1940-41. The teams were divided into four groups of four, with Rangers topping their group after five wins out of six. They then went on to face St. Mirren in the semi-final, who were defeated in a resounding fashion by four goals to one, allowing Rangers to progress to their first Southern League Cup final. This final was played against Heart of Midlothian at Hampden on the 10th May 1941, with 69,000 fans turning out for the event. This was a more fraught affair than Rangers’ previous games, and, whilst Hearts went one goal up in the first half, a second half equaliser from the light blues pushed the game to a replay. This replay again took place at Hampden just seven days later, this time in front of 90,000 supporters. Whilst Rangers went two up before the thirty minute mark, a goal before the half time whistle put Hearts within distance. The Edinburgh side found themselves back in the game at 70 minutes, when an equaliser put the teams two a-piece. Rangers dug deep for the remaining twenty minutes however, with two lightning quick goals on the 86th and 90th minutes ensuring they lifted the first ever Scottish Southern League Cup.This rather humble looking silver trophy was awarded to James 'Scot' Symon for his role in that team. Symon's is a name that will need no introduction to many of the Rangers loyal, he having succeeded legendary manager Bill Struth in 1954, steering the club to six league Championships, five Scottish Cups, and four League Cups. He also took Rangers into European football for the first time ever, guiding them to two Cup Winners Cup finals in 1961 and 1967.Perhaps lesser known is Symon's playing career, which at first glance may be deceiving having only made 32 official appearances for Rangers. This, however, does not take into consideration his distinguished service during those 'unofficial' war years. Due to Symon's erstwhile career as an architect, he was to remain in Britain, putting his considerable skills towards the war effort whilst working in a reserved occupation, a draughtsman in the Linthouse shipyard on Govan Road of Alexander Stephen & Sons. During the war, the yard produced aircraft carriers, cruisers, mine-layers, destroyers, sloops, minesweepers and tank transport ferries. This allowed him to continue playing for the club, during which time he was a mainstay of Struth's squad. Symon racked up over 250 unofficial performances for the club and plenty of silverware along the way. This is the first time any such trophy has come to auction and presents itself as a unique opportunity to own a rare and important piece of Scottish footballing history.

SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE LEAGUE CUP WINNERS GOLD MEDAL 1958/59,awarded to Mr. Robert Tait (Director) of Heart of Midlothian F.C., the obverse with central shield shaped plaque with red enamel lion rampant motif, within blue enamel border inscribed 'Scottish Football League', the reverse inscribed 'Winners League Cup 1958-59 Hof M.F. Director MR. R. TAIT', 40mm including bale, maker JWB, in nine carat gold, approximately 6g, mounted on presentation plaqueNote: This rare medal comes from a spell of Scottish League Cup dominance for the Edinburgh side. Indeed, the club have lifted that trophy only four times, all of which came during the 1950s to early 60s. This medal comes from the second time they lifted the cup, defeating Partick Thistle resoundingly by 5 goals to 1 in the final.

Lot 209

The ex-Alan Fearnly1934 Lagonda M45 4½-Litre Two-Seater TourerChassis no. Z10374•One of the fastest British sports cars of its era•Originally a saloon•Rebuilt by marque specialists Alan Brown and Jack Buckley•Attractive two-seater tourerFootnotes:'Lagonda cars have always upheld a reputation for effortless fast touring and the pride of ownership which fine detail work and distinguished coachbuilding can give. The 4½-Litre model retains these characteristics, but scores considerably over its forebears by its high power-to-weight ratio. The chassis is no bigger than the three litre car, and there is no suggestion of clumsiness, heavy steering or the other drawbacks which often accompany the large engined car.' - Motor Sport, January 1934. The 4½-Litre Lagonda was one of the most accomplished sports cars of the 1930s, as a succession of high-profile race wins, culminating in victory at Le Mans in 1935, amply demonstrates. In 1934 a team of three specially prepared short-chassis cars (effectively the soon-to-be-announced M45 Rapide) prepared by Lagonda main agents Fox & Nicholl performed creditably at the RAC Tourist Trophy at Ards, and the following year one of these TT cars driven by John Hindmarsh and Luis Fontes won the Le Mans 24-Hour endurance classic outright. The Lagonda car company was founded in 1906 in Staines, Middlesex by the American Wilbur Gunn (1859-1920) who named it after a river near his home town of Springfield, Ohio. Gunn had started out building motorcycles in the garden of his house in Staines with some success, including winning the 1905 London to Edinburgh Trial. In 1907 he launched his first car and in 1910 won the Moscow to St Petersburg Trial driving a 16/18hp model. Having established its reputation, Lagonda concentrated mainly on the production of light cars before reverting to sporting and luxury models in the mid-1920s with the introduction of the 14/60. This four-cylinder, 2.0-litre model was joined in 1929 by the first of Lagonda's own sixes - the 3-Litre - but by the mid-1930s the Meadows-engined cars were seen as the way forward. Introduced at the 1933 Olympia Show and based on the preceding ZM 3-Litre model, the M45 deployed Meadows' 4½-litre, twin-plug six to good effect, saloons being capable of reaching 90mph and tourers 'the ton' under favourable conditions. 'A short run on one of the first of the 4½-Litre Lagonda models, with an open four-seater body, left a vivid impression not only of brilliant acceleration and sheer performance, but of a car delightfully silent and easy running in a way that can be achieved to the fullest extent only by a big-engined machine working well inside its limits,' reported The Autocar in 1933. As the foregoing contemporary quote clearly demonstrates, these exceptionally handsome big-engined Lagondas created a considerable impression when new.Lagonda Club Registrar Arnold Davey advises us that this M45 was originally a pillar-less saloon. Its first owner known by the Club was fellow committee member André Kenny (1947-1960s), who had enjoyed a distinguished career during WW2 in Reconnaissance and post-war in the Foreign Office. 'BGO 681' was found as a bare chassis in November 1978 by marque specialist Alan Brown of Lancashire, and was restored with a T7 replica body by Jack Buckley. Ownership then passed to the motoring artist Alan Fearnley, who had the car's coachwork modified into the present and very attractive two-seat tourer design. The Lagonda has seen little use since its purchase by the enthusiast vendor a few years ago. Offered with a V5C document. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 216

Old Stormalong1939 Brough Superior SS100Registration no. GWB 985Chassis no. M1/2161Engine no. BS/X21094Footnotes:Legendary superbike of motorcycling's between-the-wars 'Golden Age', this Brough Superior SS100, registration 'GWB 985', is one of seven supplied new as motorcycle combinations to the Sheffield Police on 6th September 1939. Following 'demobilisation' from the police force, the Brough combination passed through various hands as family transport. The date stamp for the first recorded owner in the accompanying continuation logbook is 23rd October 1947. Four owners are recorded before the immediately preceding owner, Bill Starling, the last of these being the well-known motorcycling journalist and author, John Griffith.Mr Starling purchased 'GWB 985' in December 1972 from Ronald H Clark, author of Brough Superior - the Rolls Royce of Motor Cycles (his name does not appear in the logbook and it seems he used the SS100 with the numberplates of his SS80 attached). Ronald Clark's motorcycling memories were published in the VMCC Journal for April 1979. He recalls buying the Brough from John Griffith, and a subsequent journey from his home in Norfolk to Inverness. This SS100 is also mentioned in the Super Profile book of the Brough Superior SS100 by Colin Simms. An interview with Ronald is published under the heading Owner's View, in which he records that 'GWB 985' went to a great friend (Bill Starling).'Old Stormalong' took part in the Brough Club's 50th Anniversary Rally and appears in the book of the rally as one of the very few machines pictured in action rather than static on the rally field. 'GWB 985 is also pictured in The Classic Motor Cycle's August 2008 edition during the VMCC's Round Norfolk Run, and in the VMCC Journal for January 2011, again on a VMCC run. 'Old Stormalong' has featured frequently over the years in the Brough Club's monthly newsletter in Bill Starling's regular column, The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow . Other awards include the best 'MX100' ridden to the 2009 Brough Club Annual Rally, and the Don Morley Trophy for the best 'MX100' at the 2010 Annual Rally. The Works Record Card confirms that frame 'M1/2161' and engine 'BS/X2 1094' are original; however, it records the gearbox number as 'IN 27785'. When purchased by Bill Starling, gearbox number 'IN 27801' was installed. This is believed to have come from another machine in the same batch of Sheffield Police SS100s. The Works Record Card also confirms that 'outside handlebar controls' were fitted: drum-type twist-grip, lever control for the ignition, and an outside front brake lever (as for the clutch). These are all still in place. The rear numberplate is the genuine, alloy Brough item, while also original are the flared front mudguard and the hinged rear mudguard. Chassis number '2.19' in the works' records, the sidecar had been removed before Ronald Clark's ownership but has since been reacquired. It is fitted with a Brough Superior Cruiser body, replacing the original - and less elegant - special police body, and has a BSA front wheel hub with single-sided 8' brake. The vendor re-fitted the sidecar to the Brough with the intention of riding it to Damascus with Ant Cazelet for company – their intent being to retrace the steps of Brough-owning Lawrence of Arabia – only for the ongoing Syrian civil war to scupper the project. Included in the sale and available for collection by the successful purchaser, the 'chair' has been detached from 'Old Stormalong' but comes complete with all fittings and a comprehensive set of photographs (on CD) showing how it is fitted. When purchased by Bill Starling, the Brough was working but worn. It had limited use for a few years and was then stored for some time. Eventually, Bill's father re-commissioned the machine and returned it to him early in 1982. Around 2,000 miles were covered between then and June 1985. Some minor work was then required, which the responsibilities of part-time farming and full-time employment did not leave time for. 'Old Stormalong' went into retirement until, early in 2000, it was delivered to the workshop of expert restorer Charlie Smith of Northampton (now retired) where over the next year it underwent a thorough restoration under the supervision of Howard Wilcox, well known in the Brough Club for his expertise in all marque-related matters. As well as a full engine rebuild, the restoration included a new fuel tank supplied by Tim Ball of Superior Engineering, plus a new saddle cover and toolbox fronts; these had been obtained, many years previously, from the late Albert Wallis, long-standing and much respected Brough Club member. A small, modern battery was fitted inside an original battery case, and the carburettor body bored out and re-sleeved, dramatically improving the starting, slow running, and fuel consumption. In May 2001, 'Old Stormalong' demonstrated its renewed health and vigour with a run of 123 miles back to Norfolk. Enhancing reliability, a solid-state voltage regulator from A O Services of Watton was fitted in April 2008. A further 9,000-or-so miles had been covered, many of them on Brough Club and VMCC events, by the time the SS100 was sold to the current vendor in 2012. Since then it has been stored in air-conditioned comfort, professionally cared for, and hardly used in the last nine years (the current odometer reading is 11,666 miles). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
