CHARLES EAMES (U.S., 1907 - 1978) & RAY EAMES (U.S., 1912 - 1988)."Lounge Chair & Ottoman", 1956 design.Edition from the 1970s-80s. Herman Miller EditionRosewood frame with black leather upholstery.Publisher's label on the seat.Measures: 83 x 80 x 80 cm.The "Lounge" armchair and footrest set, made of molded wood with leather upholstery, was designed by Charles and Ray Eames. An icon of 20th century design, this furniture is part of important collections such as that of the MoMA in New York. Vitra has manufactured the Charles and Ray Eames Lounge Chair using the same manufacturing methods since the 1950s.Charles and Ray Ames, a husband and wife artistic couple, worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, fine art and film, and are responsible for numerous designs that have become 20th century classics. Charles Eames studied architecture for two years at the University of Washington, then began his career working in a studio on residential housing projects. In 1938 he moved to Cranbrook, Michigan, to continue studying architecture and design at the city's Academy of Art. He would eventually teach there, heading the industrial design department. Together with Eero Saarinen, the son of his teacher Eliel Saarinen, he designed the trophy for the Organic Design Award, given by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1941, after divorcing his first wife, he married his colleague at Cranbrook, Ray Kaiser. Together they settled in Los Angeles, where they would remain for the rest of their lives. In the late 1940s, Ray and Charles designed their home together, known as the "Eames House," now considered a masterpiece of modern architecture. In the 1950s the couple continued to work in architecture and furniture design, pioneering the use of new techniques and materials such as fiberglass and plastic resin in the manufacture of chairs. They are currently represented in the Design Museum in London and the MoMA in New York, among many others.

SC-1-63Having burst onto the scene in 1961 with a one-off Formula Junior, Motor Racing Developments (MRD) would go on to build more than 500 Brabham single-seaters but only 14 sports-racing cars, 12 of which were BT8s. MRD had been founded in 1962 by designer Ron Tauranac and then two-time Formula 1 World Champion, Jack Brabham. Brabham cars would go on to win two Formula 1 World Championships and countless races and series in lesser formulae; but unlike rivals Cooper, Lotus and Elva, the firm developed very few sports-racers. Only two designs were produced: the BT5 and BT8. Based on the successful BT2 Formula Junior, the BT5 had been designed by Tauranac to accommodate the 1,600cc Lotus Ford twin-cam engine; only two were completed, both in 1963.Chassis number 'SC-1-63' is the very first of the two Brabham BT5s built. The car was entered by Ian Walker Racing for driver Frank Gardner, who also raced for Brabham's Formula Junior works team. In Gardner's hands the BT5 was highly competitive, finishing first in its class at Snetterton and Silverstone and winning the Guards Trophy at Brands Hatch outright. Towards the end of 1963 the car was exported to the USA where it was purchased by Peter Sachs. Sachs campaigned the BT5 successfully at local level for several years, setting a lap record at Lime Rock and winning the SCCA Northeast Division F Modified Championship in 1964. The car was next owned by one Ronald Hunter (1966-1986) followed by Buzz Dryer (1986-2000); Robert Lee (2000-2005); John Delane (2005-2008); and Victor Avila (2009-2010).More recently, 'SC-1-63' has seen action in historic racing on both sides of the Atlantic. Events attended include the Silverstone Classic (2005 and 2006); Goodwood Revival (2006, 2008, 2011 and 2016 where the car set the second fastest lap of the race) and the Monterey Motorsports Reunion (2010). 'SC-1-63' was also raced by BTCC Star Colin Turkington at Silverstone in 2016. Benefiting from restoration by renowned historic competition car specialists Hall & Hall (bills available), this ultra-rare Brabham sports-racer is offered with a substantial history file containing correspondence; numerous press cuttings; a quantity of photographs; HMSA logbook; and a list of its in-period race results. Please note that if this vehicle remains within France the reduced rate of Import VAT at 5.5% will be charged on the hammer price. M45 160Having established its reputation by winning the Moscow - St Petersburg Reliability Trial of 1910 with a 30hp six, Lagonda concentrated mainly on the production of light cars before reverting to sporting and luxury models in the mid-1920s with the introduction of the 14/60. This four-cylinder, 2-litre model was joined in 1929 by the first of Lagonda's own sixes - the 3-Litre - but by the mid-1930s the Meadows-engined cars were seen as the way forward. Introduced at the 1933 Olympia Show and based on the preceding ZM 3-Litre model, the M45 deployed Meadows' 4½-litre, twin-plug six to good effect, saloons being capable of reaching 90mph and tourers the 'ton' under favourable conditions. Shortly after the M45's introduction, The Autocar got its hands on one. 'A short run on one of the first of the 4½-Litre Lagonda models, with an open four-seater body, left a vivid impression not only of brilliant acceleration and sheer performance, but of a car delightfully silent and easy running in a way that can be achieved to the fullest extent only by a big-engined machine working well inside its limits.'A team of three specially prepared short-chassis cars (effectively the soon-to-be-announced M45 Rapide) prepared by Lagonda main agents Fox & Nicholls performed creditably at the 1934 RAC Tourist Trophy at Ards, and the following year one of these TT cars driven by John Hindmarsh and Luis Fontes won the Le Mans 24-Hour endurance classic outright. Under W O Bentley's technical direction the big Lagonda became more refined: the M45's successor - the LG45 - gaining synchromesh gears, flexible engine mounts and centralised chassis lubrication among many other improvements. Endowed with such an impeccable pedigree, the 4½-Litre Lagonda quickly established itself as a favourite among the wealthy sporting motorists of its day. In its road test published on 10th April 1936, The Autocar declared: 'The 4½-Litre has always given a fine performance; in its latest form it provides all the performance that anyone can reasonably require, and at the same time has been silenced, smoothed out and made a much more comfortable car, so that in comparison with the earlier versions it is hardly recognisable on first driving it. It can only be said that the appeal of the car has been considerably widened, for the people who today set great store by noise and a harsh suspension are greatly outnumbered by those to whom refinement in a fast car is far more desirable.' One of only 278 LG45s produced during 1936/37, this example was originally fitted with a Saloon de Ville body. According to information supplied by the Lagonda Owner's Club the car's first owner was a Mr Jennings in Truro, Cornwall. The car subsequently passed through two further Cornish owners before being discovered in 1994 by Ivan Forshaw as restoration proj... For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
