The dial has repaired/filled edge chip to the V numeral otherwise appears to be in good condition with no additional visible faults of any significance.The case is generally in sound presentable condition having been cosmetically restored at some point in the not-too-distant past. There is some slight lifting to the brass and a small few areas where brass has been lost and filled with creamy golden-yellow composition. The rear door has some lifting to the brass to the internal panel and slight shrinkage. Faults are otherwise limited to some slight blooming and movement to the shell veneers. The bracket appears to retain all the brass marquetry albeit with some pinning to the rear edge strip and there is very little lifting.Clock is complete with pendulum, case key and a winder. Condition Report Disclaimer

Latterly he moved to London where he is listed as working at 49 St. John's Street, Clerkenwell between 1760 and 1794. He was member of the Clockmakers' Company being freed in 1770 and remained a member until his death in 1792. He applied for a patent for a new type of striking mechanism for both clocks and watches on 31 August 1771. Norton enjoyed Royal patronage being perhaps best known for his silver mounted four-dial astronomical clock (made in collaboration with James Ferguson F.R.S.) commissioned by George III for Buckingham House (later Palace) which still remains in the Royal Collection (RCIN 30432). He married Mary Swinnerton of Oswestry and later retired to Stonegrove House (no longer existing), Little Stanmore, Middlesex, in the parish of Whitchurch. On his death, his business was taken over by the partnership of Gravell and Tolkien. He is buried at St. Lawrence's church in Little Stanmore. A related (albeit smaller) musical movement is illustrated and discussed in Ord-Hume, Arthur W.J.G. The MUSICAL CLOCK on pages 250-51 (plate XII/10) where it is noted that Eardley Norton was one of a small number of makers who utilised the 'carriage-change system' to select tunes whereby the entire bell and hammer assembly is moved along the barrel by a leaf spring, rather than the usual arrangement where the barrel being is shunted along beneath the hammers. The 'carriage-change system' was perhaps first used by Roger Dunster and then by John Ellicott junior and provincial makers such as John Taylor of Ashton.The impressive size and quality of the current lot would suggest that it was a one-off commission no doubt for a very wealthy client as a centrepiece for an important interior. Condition Report: Movement is complete and is in clean fully-working condition including the tune selection and chime/silent and strike/silent selection dials. The movement appears to be in its original format with no visible evidence of alteration however we are aware that work has been done hence it is likely that the musical work (train, barrel and hammer assembly/carousel) have been largely re-instated but to their exact original configuration/specification. Any work that has been done has been executed to the highest standard.The dial presents as in immaculate condition but again it is likely that the enamel panels have had some restoration undertaken (again to the highest standard).The movement and dial are original to the case which is in fine condition having been cosmetically restored. The cast pineapple finial and post are most likely additions and the slender cavetto mouldings bordering the top edge of the upstand have been replaced on both sides. The mask around the dial has had a repair (insert) to the right-hand side upright (behind the veneer overlap) however the size, arch profile etc of the aperture appears to be original hence this repair is not indicative of alteration (or suggestive that the movement and dial are not original to the case). The glazed dial aperture is about 1 inch larger than the mask aperture but this would appear to be an original feature. Faults to the case are otherwise limited to minor shrinkage, a few small veneer patch repairs, re-gluing of joints and replacements to some of the small lesser mouldings; and other minor bumps, scuffs and blemishes commensurate with age.Generally a very impressive fully operational example fully restored clean condition and is complete with pendulum, winder and case key. Condition Report Disclaimer

A FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE GILT BRASS MANTEL CLOCKPLANCHON, PARIS, LATE 19th CENTURYThe eight-day countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by disc-bob pendulum incorporating Brocot type regulation to suspension, the backplate stamped PN, A PARIS beneath serial number 2284 to upper left hand margin and 8 7 to lower edge, the circular convex white enamel Roman numeral dial signed Planchon, AU PALAIS-ROYAL to centre and with Arabic five minutes beyond the outer minute track, with fine scroll pierced and engraved gilt brass hands set behind hinged bead-cast convex-glazed bezel, the case with twin handled urn surmount cast with fluted husk and laurel wreath decoration and draped with a flora swag, over drum housing the movement raised on scroll-cast upright fronted with a martial trophy flanked by generous out-swept cornucopaie adorned side scrolls, the plinth base with curved drapery cast centre flanked by panels cast with foliate scroll infill, on generous laurel-banded fluted toupe feet.52cm (20.5ins) high, 37cm (14.5ins) wide, 16.5cm (6.5ins) deep. Matieu Planchon was apprenticed to his father and subsequently worked for several of the leading French makers including Robert Houdin prior to setting up business at Palais Royal, Paris in 1890. He specialised in high-end novelty clocks such as floating turtle timepieces, and imaginative recreations of Renaissance and other historic models.  

A FINE FRENCH GILT BRASS ANGLAISE RICHE CASED PORCELAIN PANEL INSET MINIATURE CARRIAGE TIMEPIECE THE PANELS BY LUCIEN SIMONNET, PARIS, LATE 19th CENTURY The rectangular eight-day single train movement with silvered platform lever escapement and stamped with number 1782 to the lower left-hand corner of the backplate, the rectangular porcelain dial with musical trophy decorated centre to the white Roman numeral chapter ring and blued steel hands set within a polychrome painted Middle-Eastern landscape depicting a Mosque and minarets beside a lake, the anglaise riche case of Mignonnette No. 3 size with hinged reeded-baton centred carrying handle and bevelled top glass over moulded cornice with fluted frieze and Corinthian three-quarter columns with plain shafts to angles, the sides with finely painted porcelain panels depicting three-quarter length portraits of women in romanticised Middle-Eastern dress before buildings and incorporating monogram LS to lower right hand corners, the rear with bevel-glazed door, on ogee-outline base with pad feet. The clock 9cm (3.5ins) high handle down, 5.3cm (2.125ins) wide, 4.5cm (1.75ins) deep. Provenance: Private collection, East Midlands. The work of Lucien Simonnet (1849-1926) is discussed by Larry L. Fabian in his article Carriage Clock Porcelain. Artistic pedigrees hiding in plain view published in ANTIQUARIAN HOROLOGY December 2019 (pages 501-13). Simonnet was a Sevres trained painter of porcelain who appeared to specialise in producing the finest figural panels often based on works by well-known artists of the period. Fabian highlights three examples with three-quarter portrait panels after Emile Vernet-Lecomte and Charles Louis Muller executed in the romantic historic Middle-Eastern 'Orientalist' style. A fine grande-sonnerie striking carriage clock with push-button repeat and alarm also incorporating painted porcelain panels by Louis Simonnet was sold in these rooms on 24th June 2020 (lot 131) for £4,500 hammer.Miniature carriage clocks are called Mignonnettes or 'little darlings' and come in three graded sizes with No. 1 being the smallest.Condition Report: The movement appears all original, the spring is wound and the balance wheel free to oscillate however the clock is not running most likely due to the escapement itself been 'gummed-up' with old lubricant. The mechanism is generally a little discoloured neglected and there are a couple of drops of congealed oil on the backplate. The dial is free from noticeable damage although the centre appears to show some very light rubbing to the glaze. The case is generally in fine condition with minimal wear to the gilding and the glasses appear free from visible damage including corner chips. Both side panels appear free from visible damage however the left hand panel appears to have received some very slight restoration (retouching) to the rear edge adjacent to the corner pillar shaft probably to address some slight edge chipping.Timepiece does not have a winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

Rare Doubles trophy, dated 1891, important in the history of Lawn Tennis in Germany, in the form of a hallmarked .800 German silver mounted cut-glass decanter, silver mounted stopper engraved TENNIS TURNIER 1891 HAMBURG PREIS DAPPEL SPIEL, with hobnail cut-glass square decanter, height 23cm., silver mount bears German hallmarks, good condition overall, with wear to silver covered glass stopper, wear to stopper base, the neck of the decanter has a crack running down from top down into the bodyThe first German National Tennis Championships were held in Hamburg in 1891. The organiser of the championships, Carl August von der Meden, later to become recognised as the ‘Father of German Tennis’, decreed that only German and Austrian players would be allowed to enter. This was a response to earlier tennis tournaments recorded in Bad Homburg and Baden Baden in the 1870s and 1880s when British entrants frequently came away with the spoils. Tennis in Hamburg was developed by two ice skating clubs, which resulted in an unusually hard playing surface of gravel with lines of iron. The history of tennis in Uhlenhorst and early championship matches is expertly detailed by Heiner Gillmeister in his book “Tennis: A Cultural History”, p.244-269. Gillmeister identifies 1891, the year of this trophy, as a trial run for the first German championships held in 1892. In these 1891 matches, an Englishman Walter Howard won the Men’s Singles, Handicap Singles and Men’s Doubles (with his brother J.G. Howard) and this domination confirmed von der Meden’s decision to restrict entry the following year. These matches are fully detailed in Pastime magazine of September 1892. Gillmeister also wrote an article for The Tennis Collector, issue 8th August 1993, where he discusses the 1891 trial run. The article also refers to a south of England auction of 1992 where a Doubles trophy and racquets from the 1891 competition were sold. These are now in the collection of the Hamburg Clipper Club and the trophy on sale here is of significant historical interest at a national level in Germany.

A Football Association trophy plaque commemorating the first FIFA U-18 Youth tournament, held in London, 15th-17th April 1948,the silvered plaque bearing central football match medallion flanked by eight enamelled competing nations flags, inscribed, mounted on a wooden easel back, 19 by 17cm., slight surface wear with pitting and dentsThis competition later became the UEFA European U-19 championships. This inaugural tournament was competed for by England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Italy and Netherlands. The tournament was won by England who beat the Dutch 3-2 in the final.

Taxidermy: A Cased Immature White-tailed Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), circa 1882, by P.D. Malloch, Taxidermy, Perth Scotland, 1875-2020, a large full mount immature White-tailed Sea Eagle perched atop a large painted faux rock, amidst seaweed and shells, above painted groundwork beneath, set against a pale blue painted back drop, enclosed within a typical large period ebonised three-glass display case, 71cm by 34.5cm 93cm, signed and dated to rockwork - "P.D. Malloch, Perth, 1882".P.D. Malloch were a famous old-time fishing tackle shop located in Perth, Scotland, which employed professional Scottish model makers who would create exact copies of your trophy fish. Malloch models divided up into 3 categories referred to as the early Malloch maker 1900-1922, the middle Malloch maker 1920s to the early 1930s, and the late Malloch maker from 1934-1952. P.D. Malloch also established the Tay Salmon Fisheries Company in 1899, buying up the fishing rights along the river and estuary and creating one of the biggest operations of its kind. Unfortunately, the company has now ceased trading as of February 2020 after being in business for 149 years.
