WW2 USA Doolittle Tokyo Raid 18th April 1942, James Harold Jimmy Doolittle, Medal of Honour. Jimmy Doolittle had an amazing career which started as a Private First Class in 1917, he became a well-known pilot in the interwar period winning the Schneider Trophy with a Curtiss R3C 2 plane in 1925, returned to active duty in 1940, he led the Doolittle raid on Tokyo in 1942 and was finally made a four star general in 1985 awarded by President Ronald Regan, a rare signed cover featuring a painting by John Young showing Doolittles B 25 Mitchell bombing Tokyo harbour in 1942 containing historical information sheets detailing Doolittles career and a black and white photograph of Doolittle. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the United Nations Endangered Species Series F.s. 0,80 Polar Bear stamp issued March 13, 1997. A denizen of the Arctic, the polar bear is often found on icefloes where it blends in with the white background as it hunts for food. This large carnivore covers a wide range in its pursuit of seals and other prey. Following their southward migrations, the polar bear may travel as far south as the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Canada and the mouth of the Amur River in Russia. Agile on ice and a fast swimmer, the polar bear also feeds on fish, seaweed, grass, birds and caribou. An adult male may weigh as much as 1,600 pounds and stand over five feet tall at the shoulder. The polar bear is characterized by white fur, a small head and a long neck. The bottoms of the feet are protected by hair that insulates them from the cold and helps the animal move easily over ice. Though the polar bear is usually shy and cautious, it is extremely dangerous when confronted or attacked. During winter, bear cubs are born in dens of ice or snow. The young weigh about 2 pounds at birth and stay with the mother for 10 months to 2 years. Because of irresponsible hunting practices, the polar bear has become an endangered species. Sought for its trophy value, this arctic mammal is also hunted by Eskimos for its hide, tendons, fat and flesh. In the early 1970s, Stirling Moss parted with most of his trophies to an American collector, only keeping a few of his original ones for himself. Our vendor discovered this trophy in the USA at Pebble Beach with a trophy specialist in 2010. It was for his win in his Jaguar XK 120 in the 1951 Daily Express Tourist Trophy at Silverstone. Recognising it as a rare opportunity, he brought the trophy home... to this day he has not seen a Stirling Moss trophy offered for sale. On his return, he showed the trophy to Stirling who remarked: "It was an important victory in my early career".Stirling hand-signed the trophy and a photo of him signing it is included as is a race programme from that day. A rare Rolls Royce Spirit of Ecstasy flying lady, cast in silver, hallmarked London 1977, representing the Queen's Silver Jubilee, mounted on stepped walnut presentation plinth.Plinth marked 'Spirit of Excellence Gold Award Trophy', this was believed to have been presented to members of staff on the shop floor at the Rolls Royce plant in Crewe for their work contribution to the manufacturing plant, the base of the mascot signed Sykes and believed to be of a small number produced for the Jubilee year.15cm (6")
