A FRENCH SILVER-HILTED SMALL-SWORD, CIRCA 1780 with tapering hollow-triangular blade, signed 'Le Court Fourbissr. du Roi, Rue St Honoré près celle des Poulies Au Grand Monarque Paris', silver hilt finely pierced, cast and chased in low relief, comprising double shell-guard decorated with a differing trophy-of-arms on each face inside and out, each flanked by a pair of trellis panels enclosed with delicate roping, the whole surrounded by beadwork and conventional foliage, a pair of arms (marks rubbed), and globular quillon, knuckle-guard, pommel and grip all decorated in openwork en suite (rubbed) 84.0 cm; 33 1/8 in blade Lecourt is recorded as fourbisseur in Paris, circa 1775-85.
A RARE DANISH OFFICER'S PALLASCH, CIRCA 1720-30 with broad heavy double-edged blade of flattened-hexagonal section (the upper third missing), etched and gilt with hounds in pursuit of hares amidst scrolls within a central fuller on each face, the dogs and hares interspersed with pierced rondels filled with an alternating arrangement of six coral and six turquoise beads, and enriched with further scrolls on a gilt panel on each face at the forte, brass hilt cast and chased in low relief, comprising straight quillon with monsterhead finial, frontal guard decorated with the seated figure of victory on an elaborate trophy-of-arms and joined to the knuckle-guard by two curved bars with monsterhead finials, knuckle-guard en suite, thumb-loop and pommel each decorated with a further trophy-of-arms, fishskin-covered grip studded with three clam-shell rivets at the front, in its leather-covered wooden scabbard (missing the corresponding portion) with locket en suite with the hilt, the locket and hilt retaining some original gilding 62.7 cm; 24 ¾ in blade This sword is based on the gold-hilted sword of King Frederick IV (1671-1730), preserved in Rosenborg Slot (cat. no. 40). The Rosenborg catalogue states that in 1726-27 the Danish Mounted Life Regiment, Livregiment til Hest, was issued with 539 broadswords with brass hilts decorated with the cypher of King Frederick IV. While the corresponding officer's sword is not known it was probably based on the gold-hilted Royal sword mentioned above. See Hoff et al,1956, pp. 68-69. Another, formerly in the Warwick Castle Armoury (Inv. No. E015), was sold in these rooms, lot 264, 12th December 2007 and another is illustrated Southwick 1982, p.137, no. 366.

A GERMAN ETCHED SPONTOON FOR A GUARD OF THE REPUBLIC OF NUREMBURG, 18TH CENTURY with leaf-shaped head etched with an elaborate trophy-of-arms on one face and 'R.P.NORMBERG' above the town arms on a trophy-of-arms on the other, moulded cross-piece, moulded socket, a pair of short straps, on its studded wooden haft with iron shoe 35.5 cm; 14 in head Nuremburg was at the height of its economic and cultural development in the 16th and early 17th century. The devastations in the thirty years war, along with the shift of world trade routes from land to the sea, led to its decline and loss of free imperial status, becoming part of the Bavarian Kingdom in 1806.
A FRENCH 20 BORE FLINTLOCK LONG HOLSTER PISTOL BY LA CHAISE A PARIS, CIRCA 1730-40 with tapering sighted barrel fitted with silver bead fore-sight on a bed of gold scrolls, inscribed '6', signed in gold and decorated with a gold trophy-of-arms over the breech (worn), engraved tang, signed engraved stepped bevelled lock involving a trumpeting putti ahead of the cock and a trophy-of-music on the tail (cock replaced, action defective), figured walnut full stock carved with foliage (cracked and chipped), engraved iron mounts comprising pierced side-plate formed of scrolls and foliage carrying a warrior profile medallion, spurred pommel, trigger-guard with acanthus finial, and a pair of ramrod-pipes and wooden ramrod 32.5 cm; 12 1/4 in barrel Laurent de Lachaise is recorded in Paris circa 1706-44.

COBHAM ALAN: (1894-1973) English Pioneer Aviator, a specialist in long distance flights. A large 4to printed menu for a Banquet in honour of Alan Cobham in recognition of his successful flights from England to Capetown and Australia and back, given by the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America Inc., at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, 29th November 1926, signed by Cobham in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area at the head of the menu and further signed by seven other individuals including William P. MacCracken Jr. (1888-1969, American Pioneer Aviator), Frederick Trubee Davison (1896-1974, American Aviator of World War I), Will H. Hays (1879-1954, American Politician) and Mario de Bernardi (1893-1959, Italian Fighter Pilot of World War I, Test Pilot and Seaplane Air Racer of the 1920s) etc. Together with an attractive unsigned 4to printed page (possibly a loose insert originally presented with the menu) honoring Major Mario de Bernardi as Holder of the World's Seaplane Speed Record and achievements with the Italian Schneider Trophy Racing Team and featuring his portrait. Some light overall age wear and some staining, only very slightly affecting some of the signatures. G, 2
