A George III silver agricultural trophy goblet, by Burwash and Sibley, London 1809, circular bowl, gilded interior, on a raised circular foot, engraved with a tree and corn, and 'The Prosperity and security of Great Britain', height 11.8cm, approx. weight 6oz. This inscription relates to the Workington Agricultural Society, who were also active on the Isle of Man and were under the presidency of John Curwen (1756-1823).
A Victorian Regimental silver-gilt two-handled trophy cup with an associated cover, over-stamped with maker's mark of Gibson and Langman, London 1893, the cover London 1803, vase form, with cast bifurcated snake handles above an acanthus leaf girdle, foliate borders, the pull-off cover with a knop finial, engraved '10 Royal Hussars 1871 Hunter's Cup', with the cipher of The Prince of Wales and the initials A. E for Albert Edward within an applied oak leaf wreath, the reverse inscribed 'Presented by H.R.H The Prince of Wales', 'Facsimile of cup won by H. S. Gough presented by him to The Officers' Mess 10th Royal Hussars on his leaving the Regiment, 19th August 1889', height 36cm, approx. weight 76.4oz.

An 1803 pattern infantry officers sword, shallow fullered steeply curved blade 30½”, by Osborn & Gunby, etched with blued and gilt for two thirds length with floral devices, trophy of arms, crowned GR cypher, standing Britannia and elaborate device at forte on one side, and on the other side floral devices, crowned 1803-16 Royal Arms with supporters and motto, “JJ”, trophy of drums and instruments and elaborate device with maker’s name and “Warranted”, gilt brass hilt, the guard with 4 loops on each side into crowned GR cypher and knucklebow, lion’s head pommel, facetted backstrap,wirebound leather grip. Good Condition, the blade retaining approximately 60% blueing and gilding, the hilt 30% gilt (a few edge nicks). Plate 67
A 1796 pattern light cavalry officer’s sword, curved, fullered blade 33”, marked “Warranted Double Proof” on backstrap, etched and blued and gilt for two thirds length with ornamental Union wreath, 1801-16 Royal Arms, standing Britannia and elaborate trophy of arms on one side, and on the other with female head in floral frame, crowned GR cypher, mounted trooper, trophy of arms and foliage in urn, facetted steel hilt with crossguard, langets, knucklebow, forward sloping pommel and backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings (minor dents, one throat screw missing). Very Good Condition, the blade retaining approximately 85% blueing and gilding) Plate 67
A most interesting late 18th century Italian cavalry officer’s presentation sword, broad curved shallow fullered blade 32”, with maker’s name “F. Chuggi Brescia” on backstrap, and etched on one side “Martinengo Colleoni L’Ainé” and on the other “Gage d’Amitieé” with small floral sprays, elaborate steel stirrup hilt with slender langets, forward sloping cap shaped pommel and plain backstrap, crossguard and knucklebow pierced with chain link panels overall, floral quillon, pommel cap embossed with trophy of fasces and flags, the top of the backstrap with demon’s head, wirebound grip, in its leather scabbard covered overall with pierced steel chain link panels, with short open centre section and solid panels to locket and chape, 2 suspension rings. Good Condition, with some dark patina (blade polished) Plate 68
A Georgian light cavalry officer’s sword, broad, curved, shallow fullered blade 29½”, etched with crowned GR cypher, simple trophy of arms and floral flourishes on one side and on the other with dismounted dragoon waving his sword and floral wreaths, gilt brass stirrup hilt with quillon and langets, facetted knucklebow, plain rounded pommel and backstrap, diced ivory grip (few small cracks and small chip), in its leather scabbard with locket, centre band and chape, with 2 rings, the gilt locket with oval engraved mark of “Salter, 35 Strand, Jeweller & Sword Cutler”. Good Condition, the hilt and scabbard retaining much original gilt (blade some wear and pitting patches) Plate 68
An English smallsword, c 1775, colichmarde blade 32”, faintly etched with trophy of arms and instruments on the broad face at forte and various devices on the 2 upper faces, steel hilt with scalloped edge and a little engraving to top of small oval dish guard, pas d’ane rings, crossguard with quillon, slightly swollen knucklebow, multi facetted ovoid pommel, simulated copper wirebound grip. Good Condition (some wear and light pitting to steel parts overall). Plate 69
A good Austrian 20 bore flintlock holster pistol by Georg Keiser, c 1730, 19½” overall, barrel 13½” with shaped and engraved breech, top flat gold inlaid “Georg Keiser in Wienn”, breech tang engraved and numbered “2”; flat lock with swan neck cock, squared pan and unbridled frizzen, plate engraved with maker’s name around cock and pan, and with scene of horseman saluting his superior officer with tented encampment in the background; butt walnut fullstock with carving around the mounts and breech tang; chiselled and engraved brass mounts retaining traces of gilt, including long spurred butt cap, fore end cap with integral ramrod pipe, trigger guard with portrait medallion, and sideplate engraved with trophy of arms and figures; original ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition, the lock quite crisp with dark patina. (some wear, old repair to fore end). Plate 79
A pair of unusually long 18 bore flintlock holster pistols by Knight, London, 18” overall, slender half octagonal barrels 12”, engraved with flowers and “London” within panels, flat scroll engraved locks with maker’s name; walnut fullstocks and tutenag mounts, including engraved long spur butt caps with mask finials, trophy of arms sideplates and engraved trigger guards. Good Working Order and Condition (ramrods replaced, one fore end repaired). Plate 79
A large and impressive free standing early Victorian silver presentation trophy, the body embellished with applied branches of ivy, with free standing figure of a cavalry officer in full dress with shako, and holding a Union flag, on either side, elaborate acanthus leaf stem and base with scrolled feet, the body engraved “Presented to Lt. Colonel John Bennett Hearsey of the 6th Light Cavalry by Major General Watson and other officers of the Bengal Cavalry as a Small Token of their Regard and Esteem, 1846”. On the other side, in script, 18 battle honours “Delhi” to “Sobraon”, stepped lid with oak wreath rim and on the top a mounted figure of an officer with flag pole and pennant, Indian Hallmark on the base H & Co, an elephant, on trophy capital “A”, and trident head, height 18”, weight 8lbs 7ozs (3.84kg). Basically Very Good Condition (a few parts detached but present). Plate 8 Note: The hallmark is that of Hamilton & Co, Calcutta, a firm started by Robert Hamilton in 1808, which acquired numerous partners and opened branches all over India.
