A late 18th century continental dagger, possibly Italian, slender leaf shaped blade 6”, with flat, scroll etched panel at forte and central fuller towards point, unusual dog head terminal into writhen, S shaped crossguard, swollen ribbed grip composed of segments of coloured horn interspersed with brass, small brass pommel engraved with a stylized trophy, in its brown leather sheath. A good cut steel hilted courtsword, hollow triangular section blade 31½Â”, by Gilbert & Hasell, New Burlington St, London W, etched with trophy and scrolls in panels, plated hilt with turn down shell guard, shallow pas dÂ’ane rings, crossguard and knucklebow, urn shaped pommel and slightly swollen grip, decorated with line shading and cut steel studs, in its leather scabbard with plated mounts and velvet frog, pigskin lined leatherette case. An interesting French 14 bore flintlock holster pistol made for the Turkish market, c 1770, 19” overall, barrel 12½Â” deeply chiselled with trophy of arms, the tang with gold inlaid fishroe panels, the rounded lock with cock chiselled with gold inlaid foliage and with gold lined pan, the plate signed “L. Lamotte a St Etienne”, the walnut stock with traces of silver wire inlay and with long spurred embossed silver buttcap, stamped near the barrel tang with star and crescent enclosing initials “CC” and number “2166”, with contemporary replacement silver trigger guard, sideplate and escutcheon. An 18th century coconut flask, carved overall in oval wreath panels, with “GR” cypher and lion with palm trees, angels and figures in woodland, phoenix in wreath on trophy of flags (one flag bearing an anchor) all within borders of foliage, plain silver (not Hallmarked) nozzle and fine linked suspension chain and mounts, 6¼Â” overall. A good cut steel hilted courtsword, hollow triangular section blade 31”, by Henry Poole & Co Savile Row, London W, etched with trophy and scrolled panels, plated hilt with pierced turn down shell guard, pas d’ane rings, crossguard and knucklebow, urn shaped pommel and slightly swollen grip, profusely decorated overall with cut steel studs, gilt knot and bullion tassel, in its black patent leather scabbard (kinked near chape) with plated mounts, leatherette and pigskin case. A 1796 pattern infantry officer’s sword, straight fullered blade 32”, etched with Royal Arms, crowned GR cypher, small scroll “Warranted” , officer with sword, trophy and flourishes, brass hilt with double shell guard, the inner shell turning down, knucklebow and quillon, facetted urn pommel, simulated silver wirebound grip, with knot (AF). Good Condition, dark patina to blade with a little original gilding, traces of gilt to hilt. Plate 17
An unusual Georgian infantry officer’s sword, c 1780, straight fullered blade 33”, marked Jeffery, Bristol on backstrap, etched with crowned GR cypher, grinning face in trophy of arms, cornucopia and floral flourishes, steel stirrup hilt with long quillon, scalloped centre section and small langets, knucklebow into facetted pommel and backstrap, flat protruding pommel cap, swollen ribbed ebony grip (chipped at top). Good Condition for age with a pleasing patina. Plate 17
An 1803 light company field officer’s sword, broad curved shallow fullered blade 32”, stamped “S” at forte, with traces of etched crowned Royal Arms, crowned GR cypher, trophy and flourishes, gilt brass hilt, the slotted guard with 4 looped panels on either side, into knucklebow with crowned strung bugle in wreath into lion’s head pommel and facetted backstrap, chequered swollen ivory grip (finely cracked). Good Condition the hilt retaining approximately 15% gilt (knucklebow mis-shaped and loose, some wear overall). Plate 21
An 1803 pattern infantry light company officer’s sword, curved, fullered blade 29”, etched with crowned GR cypher, trophy of arms, wreath and flourishes, copper gilt hilt, the slotted guard with 4 looped panels either side, into knucklebow with crowned GR cypher surmounted by strung bugle into lion’s head pommel and facetted backstrap, wirebound dark wood grip (split). Good Condition, the hilt retaining approximately 30% gilt (light pitting stains to blade) Plate 21
An 1796 pattern Georgian officerÂ’s dress sword, slightly curved, pipe backed blade 31½Â”, finely etched for two thirds length with crowned 1801-16 Royal Arms on trophy of flags, stylized urn, trophies of arms and instruments, laurel wreaths, foliage and scrolls, heavy steel facetted hilt with squared curl quillon, langets, knucklebow into forward sloping pommel and backstrap, wirebound dark fishskin grip. Good Condition (minor pitting stains). Plate 24

WAGHORN RICHARD: (1904-1931) English Aviator, pilot of the winning aircraft in the 1929 Schneider Trophy seaplane race. Fountain pen ink signature (‘H. R. D. Waghorn’) and date, February 1931, in his hand on a piece. Neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album beneath a newspaper photograph. Together with a second, almost identical signed piece, also neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album alongside several newspaper portraits and an ink annotation in the hand of a collector. Autographs of Waghorn are rare as a result of his early death at the age of 26 in a flying accident. Also including Augustus Orlebar (1897-1943) British Air Vice Marshal, a Schneider Trophy winner and World Air Speed Record holder. Fountain pen ink signature (‘A. H. Orlebar’) on a piece, neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album beneath a newspaper portrait and ink annotation in the hand of a collector. Lacking the dustjacket. Some light age wear and minor staining to the red cloth boards, otherwise VG The signatories in the present book include all eleven members of the Manchester United team who won the European Cup in 1968, thus becoming the first English team to lift the trophy.
