RYDER CUP: NORMAN WOOD'S REPLICA RYDER CUP TROPHYBy Asprey, London 2001Modelled as the original; on domed foot, the knopped stem with lion masks to top, one side of the body engraved 'The Ryder Cup', the other with cast American and European flags crossed, the lid with standing golf figure, the stepped wooden plinth with metal border engraved 'Norman Wood Ryder Cup Player 2001'. With it's original and often discarded box.Overall height 30.5 cm (12 in)Footnotes:The PGA celebrated its Centenary in 2001 and in recognition of its wonderful Ryder Cup history it presented all living Ryder Cup European players with their own Ryder Cup trophy. This fine gesture was seen to be even more significant when the terrorist events in the United States on September 11 2001 forced the postponement of the 34th Ryder Cup Matches. This trophy belongs to 1975 GB & I Ryder Cup player Norman Wood. Born in Scotland in 1947, he turned professional in 1965. In 1972 he won the Italian Open; in 1973 he won the Jamaica Open; in 1974 he was runner-up to Gary Player at the Australian Open and at the conclusion of the 1975 season Wood finished 18th on the Order of Merit.Selected for the 21st Ryder Cup Matches at Laurel Valley Golf Club, PA as one of six rookies, Wood defeated Lee Trevino 2/1 in the singles and lost with Tommy Horton 4/2 against Snead and Nicklaus. The United States team won the competition by a score of 21 to 11 points. Back problems forced Wood to prematurely retire from the tour and in 1982 he took up a permanent position at the Royal Guernsey Golf Club.
