CHIC GEATONS OF CELTIC F.C., EMPIRE EXHIBITION WINNERS SILVER TROPHY, 1938 modelled in the form of an assayed sterling silver Exhibition's Tait or Festival Tower, over an ebonised plinth base mounted with plaque inscribed THE EMPIRE EXHIBITION SCOTLAND, 1938 FOOTBALL TROPHY WON BY CHAS GEATONSNote: This rare and important piece of Celtic history relates to the 1938 Empire Exhibition football tournament, contested between Aberdeen, Celtic, Hearts, Rangers, Brentford, Chelsea, Sunderland, and Everton. The story of the competition is perhaps best summarised in the words of the Willie Maley song:'In 38 there was a show, And Glasgow was the place to go, A model of The Tower was football’s prize.England sent four of the best, They didn’t meet with much success, Because the trophy ended up in Paradise.'After seeing off Sunderland and Hearts, the final was contested vs. Everton in front of 82,000 fans at Ibrox. An extra time goal from Johnny Crum secured the victory, and with it, the spoils. It must also be noted the importance with which this, and later the Coronation Cup competition, were regarded. A vital chance for clubs to test themselves against other leagues before the introduction of European competitions. 16cm high

Lot 1920

JOHN BONNAR OF CELTIC F.C., CORONATION CUP WINNERS SILVER TROPHY, 1953 the assayed sterling silver twin handled trophy with domed cover and footballer finial, the body relief decorated with profile of Queen Elizabeth II below the inscription CORONATION CUP, inscribed verso 1953 WON BY JOHN BONNAR CELTIC F.C. 20.5.53, on plinth baseNote: Similarly to the Exhibition Cup, this tournament was an important chance to test the team against opposition from a different league. It was contested to mark the coronation of Elizabeth II, with Aberdeen, Celtic, Hibs, Rangers, Arsenal, Manchester Utd., Newcastle Utd., and Tottenham being invited to take part.Despite not being favourites, Celtic saw off Arsenal (1952/53 Division 1 champions) and Manchester Utd. (1951/52 champions), to meet Hibs in the final. Indeed, the person to whom this was awarded, goalkeeper John Bonnar, was critical in helping the team to victory. With his help, Celtic won the final 2-0 vs. Hibs in front of 117,000 spectators at Hampden.Again, in the words of the Willie Maley song:'Well Coronation time was here, Fifty Three, that was the year, Another four from England met their doom. They said ‘we’ll have to try again’, But like before it was in vain, Because the Cup is in the Parkhead trophy room' 21cm high

WON BY CELTIC F.C. THOMAS HINDS (players name misspell), in fifteen carat gold, in gilt tooled morocco boxNote: Tommy Hynds officially played for Celtic between 1898 and 1900, though made further occasional appearances before signing for Manchester City in 1902.He represented the Bhoys on 31 occasions, with one of those appearances coming in the 1st round of this 1898/99 Cup run vs. the 6th Galloway Rifle Volunteers. Whilst he didn’t play in the final, this medal looks to have been presented to him for his part in the competition – including a misspell of his surname.Celtic resoundingly beat the 6th GRV 8 goals to 1 in that first match, before going on to beat St. Bernards, Queen’s Park and Port Glasgow on route to the final. This would become only the second ‘Old Firm’ final, Celtic looking to exact revenge on Rangers after defeat in 1894.They would by scoring 2 goals to Rangers’ 0. Lot 1888

COWLAIRS F.C., INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION MEDAL, 1888 the obverse relief cast with classical scene bordered by inscription, the reverse inscribed Football Competition WON BY COWLAIRS SEPTR bordered by laurel wreath, in giltNote: This highly important medal comes from Celtic Football Clubs first ever final, that being the 1888 Glasgow Exhibition Cup, played in their inaugural year. The Cup was a one-off tournament played alongside the Glasgow International Exhibition of that year, with sixteen teams invited to take part. Matches were played throughout the month of August, with the final taking place on the 6th September.Celtic were expected to be a dominant force, having formed a few months earlier, and comprising of former Hibs and Renton players – one commentator describing them as a ‘Glasgow-Irish Roman Catholic combination’.They had to see off Abercorn, Dumbarton Athletic and Partick Thistle to reach the final. This was played against Cowlairs at the University of Glasgow recreational grounds. Despite being favourites, Celtic went two goals down on the 65th minute, with their opponents seeing out the victory – Celtic Football Clubs first ever cup final and first ever defeat...Vengeance would come however, with both teams meeting a few weeks later in the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup, an 8-0 thrashing on the cards. Further glory was gleaned the following year too, when they met in the final of the 1889 Glasgow North Eastern Cup. Celtic would go on to lift their first trophy, emphatically winning 6-1.And if you know your history… 3.8cm diameter Qty: approx. 26g

The first manager of Celtic and one of the most successful in British sporting history.Despite over four decades of service, it wouldn't be until 1953 that a testimonial game was finally arranged. Indeed, the then 85-year old kicked off the game against Irish opposition Bohemians, a match Celtic were fated to win 10-1. An apt send off for a man so important to the club's history. This trophy was awarded to John Bonnar, goalkeeper and key player in another important victory that year - as discussed in the next lot. 16cm high

The competition was played in lieu of the FA Cup, which was supended during the war years. Lot 1774

S.G. DYNAMO DRESDEN, UEFA CUP QUARTER-FINAL JERSEY, 1975/76 embroidered crest, no. 6 verso, presented alongside a copy of Ray Kennedy's biographyNote: The above shirt was gained by Ray Kennedy as a swap after one of Liverpool's UEFA Cup quarter-final ties vs. Dresden. The first leg was contested on the 3rd March 1976 and ended 0-0, the second on the 17th March 1976 and ended 2-1 to Liverpool. Liverpool went on to win the trophy vs. Club Brugge. This was their second European trophy, and came during a period of dominance. Indeed, they went on to win two European Cups on the bounce after this UEFA Cup, and therefore this rare Dresden top comes as a relic from one of the clubs most historic periods. It was purchased at Christie's Sporting Auction on the 20th October 1993, and was noted as 'This jersey was gained by Kennedy as a swop after one of the legs of the Quarter-Final matches during the UEFA Cup campaign, season 1975-76.'

McKinnon's role was of course bittersweet. Whilst having been a stalwart for the team for over ten years, a horrific leg break during the second round match of the competition vs. Sporting Lisbon effectively ended his career. This watch therefore represents both an important item of memorabilia awarded to those who helped Rangers achieve their only ever European trophy, but also as recognition to McKinnon, who had been so important to Rangers over the preceding years, though who's career was cruelly cut short during the competition.A picture of McKinnon wearing the watch is featured in the listing.
