Charles Eames studied architecture for two years at the University of Washington, then began his career working in a studio on residential housing projects. In 1938 he moved to Cranbrook, Michigan, to continue studying architecture and design at the city's Academy of Art. He eventually became a teacher there, heading the industrial design department. Together with Eero Saarinen, the son of his teacher Eliel Saarinen, he designed the trophy for the Organic Design Prize, awarded by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1941, after divorcing his first wife, he married his colleague at Cranbrook, Ray Kaiser. Together they settled in Los Angeles, where they remained for the rest of their lives. In the late 1940s, Ray and Charles designed their home together, known as the "Eames House", now considered a masterpiece of modern architecture. In the 1950s the couple continued to work in architecture and furniture design, pioneering the use of new techniques and materials such as fibreglass and plastic resin in the manufacture of chairs. They are currently represented in the Design Museum in London and the MoMA in New York, among many others.

Fox's political career lasted over 38 years. Fox championed the causes of liberty, religious minorities, the French Revolution and was a fierce opponent of the King, George III. The King’s eldest son George, Prince of Wales was a Fox-ite ally and regularly wore a buff-coloured waistcoat, indicating his political support for the Whig party.Edmund Burke’s eulogy of Fox, in the House of Commons, after he took on the tyranny of the East India Company, 1 December 1783: "He well knows what snares are spread about his path, from personal animosity…and possibly from popular delusion. But he has put to hazard his ease, his security, his interest, his power, even his…popularity. …He is traduced and abused for his supposed motives. He will remember that obloquy is a necessary ingredient in the composition of all true glory: he will remember…that calumny and abuse are essential parts of triumph. …He may live long, he may do much. But here is the summit. He never can exceed what he does this day." The quotation was used by President (at the time Senator) John F Kennedy as the Frontispiece to his book Profiles in Courage, 1956. The inscription on the blade is taken from Charles Churchill's poem "Night, an epistle to Robert Lloyd", 1761.

The name Anoakia was created from the first two letters of Anita, the oak trees on the land, and the last two letters of Arcadia.Anita Baldwin (1876-1939) was the daughter of Elias Jackson ‘Lucky’ Baldwin (1828-1909) and both were significant figures in the history and development of Southern California. Not least in establishing Arcadia as a City and Lucky Baldwin became its first Mayor. Anita was an independent and philanthropic woman who inherited a love of animals from her father and when she built her home she also established a breeding farm for livestock and purebred horses. She also established the Anoakia kennels. The California Poppy is the State flower of California and an article in the Pasadena Star News, dated April 5th 1916, has the headline “California Poppy is used as a trophy Design by Mrs Anita Baldwin. Granted copyright by U.S Government to owner of Anokia (sic) Kennels.” The article goes on to say: “The California poppy is the design of the trophy, the flower forming the bowl, while the stem is in the shape of the leaves. Metals tested - the silver-coloured metal handles and bases test as 925 standard and the metal beneath the gilt as 800 standard. Presumed American because of the 'Anoakia' inscription.
