A man of the people, he developed into one of the biggest draws in the division and a hero in Scotland. On 16th May 1934 he won the Scottish flyweight title with a 15 round decision over Jim Campbell in Glasgow. His prolific form continued in 1934 and into 1935 with a record of 20-0-1. In September 1935, Lynch defeated Jackie Brown in Manchester in the second round thus winning the National Boxing Association and BBB of C British flyweight title. On the 19th January 1937 he defeated Small Montana in London to establish himself the undisputed world flyweight boxing champion. A further defining moment came eight months later when he successfully defended his crown against Peter Kane. The above trophy relates to that bout. Brown - one of the greatest amateur riders of his time. But he was on rather an inferior jumper and fell two fences from the end leaving Norman (Loder) and myself to contest a very close finish, during which we weren`t moving nearly so fast as some of the spectators imagined, and which resulted in Cockbird winning by not much more than the length of his neck`.

He recounts how in the race he was almost unseated four fences from home but recovered and `after that … life became lyrical, beatified, ecstatic … to put it tersely I just galloped past Brownrigg, sailed over the last two fences and won by ten lengths.... As for Cockbird no words could ever express what we felt about him. He had become the equine equivalent of divinity`.
