THE FOLLOWING LOT RELATES TO THE CAREER OF SCOTTISH BOXING LEGEND BENNY LYNCH. AN EXTREMELY RARE SILVER TWO-HANDLED FLYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP OF EUROPE TROPHY AND COVER the body inscribed Flyweight Championship of Europe, (15 Rounds-3 Minutes each Round), Benny Lynch (Glasgow) v Peter Kane (Golborne), at Shawfield Park, Glasgow, 13th October. 1937, Referee: Mr. W.H. Barrington Dalby, Watford, Won By, Benny Lynch (in Thirteen Round). Lord Lonsdale Trophy, Presented by The British Boxing Board of Control (1929) 10in. (25.5cm) high Sheffield 1937 small area of damage on the top of one handle and very slight bend on base. PROVENANCE: Edmistons Auctioneers, Glasgow, 1965, no. 250. Benny Lynch is arguably considered one of the finest flyweight boxers in the pre-Second World War era and is generally regarded as one of the greatest fighters ever to come out of Great Britain. Born in Glasgow in 1913 he turned pro in 1931 at 18 years old. He possessed awesome punching power for a flyweight. A man of the people, he developed into one of the biggest draws in the division and a hero in Scotland. On 16th May 1934 he won the Scottish flyweight title with a 15 round decision over Jim Campbell in Glasgow. His prolific form continued in 1934 and into 1935 with a record of 20-0-1. In September 1935, Lynch defeated Jackie Brown in Manchester in the second round thus winning the National Boxing Association and BBB of C British flyweight title. On the 19th January 1937 he defeated Small Montana in London to establish himself the undisputed world flyweight boxing champion. A further defining moment came eight months later when he successfully defended his crown against Peter Kane. The above trophy relates to that bout. This fight also saw him win a Lonsdale Belt outright.

A silver two-handled trophy cup, by The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company, London 1912, of circular form with scroll handles and central girdle, on a raised circular foot, inscribed ` Atherstone Hunt Point to Point March 20th 1914, Heavy Weight Race Won By S. Sassoon`s Cockbird`, height 15.3cm, approx. weight 28oz. Provenance: Siegfried Sassoon and thence by descent to the present owner. In the second volume of his autobiography, `The Weald of Youth` (Faber and Faber 1942) Sassoon writes about this race: `The Heavy-Weight race ought to have been won by H.A. Brown - one of the greatest amateur riders of his time. But he was on rather an inferior jumper and fell two fences from the end leaving Norman (Loder) and myself to contest a very close finish, during which we weren`t moving nearly so fast as some of the spectators imagined, and which resulted in Cockbird winning by not much more than the length of his neck`.
An Edwardian silver two-handled trophy cup, by William Hutton and Sons, London 1908, of circular form with leaf capped scroll handles with central girdle, on a raised circular foot, inscribed, `Won by Mr. S. Sassoon`s Bay Gelding Cockbird Ridden by Owner`, the reverse inscribed `S.D.H Point-to-Point Heavy Weight Cup, Presented by Lt. Col. L.C. Thompson 1911`, height 23.5cm, approx. weight 44oz. Provenance: Siegfried Sassoon and thence by descent to the present owner. In his semi fictional autobiography `Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man` (Faber and Gwyer 1928) Sassoon devotes a whole chapter to `The Colonels Cup`. He recounts how in the race he was almost unseated four fences from home but recovered and `after that … life became lyrical, beatified, ecstatic … to put it tersely I just galloped past Brownrigg, sailed over the last two fences and won by ten lengths.... As for Cockbird no words could ever express what we felt about him. He had become the equine equivalent of divinity`.

Distinguished Conduct Medal Citation. 6 C./S./M. A. Pearce, 1st Bn. W. Gds. (Bristol) (LG 3 Sept 1919) ‘He has served as company serjeant-major since August 1915, in the field, and has always shown the greatest keenness and devotion to duty. On the 25th February, 1918 at Roeux he displayed the greatest gallantry and initiative in taking forward under cover of darkness a Lewis gun into No Man’s Land, and at dawn opening fire on an enemy machine gun which had been causing great annoyance to our working parties. His fire was so heavy and accurate that the enemy were forced to relinquish their post and retire over the open, five of them being shot whilst doing so’, The Army Rifle Association-Roberts Cup (Corpl. A Danish Art Deco silver coloured flared tall beaker by Carl M. Cohr, Fredericia, retailed by the Court jewellers P. Hertz, national standard mark for 1937, assay master Jens Sigsgaard, engraved with a crowned ‘CX’ (for King Christian X) above ‘Cannes 1939’, 15.5cm (6in) high, 369g (11.85 oz). Christian X was a noted yachtsman competing in regattas at Cannes during the 20s and 30s. This is perhaps a regatta trophy.
Hong Kong silver presentation plaque on carved Oriental hardwood shield and an accompanying signed silver necklet, 19.2cm dia, 243grs The trophy shield was presented to a high ranking Police Officer serving in Hong Kong. The Officer was instrumental in rescuing a young boy who had been kidnapped. In gratitude the family melted down their silver objects to make the shield. Once suitably engraved it was presented to him along with the necklet that the boy had been wearing to ward off evil spirits

A late 19th Century satinwood and marquetry oval occasional table, crossbanded and bordered with lines, the top decorated with a central oval panel with musical trophy amidst flowers and foliage, surrounded by further musical trophies and cherubs in scrolling floral cartouches within husk and foliate surrounds, the frieze with ribbon tied drapery and floral foliate garlands, on square tapered legs with pendant husks, terminating in brass cappings and castors, the top 80cm (2ft 7 1/2in) x 52.5cm (1ft 8 3/4in), reconstructed.
