A FINE AND RARE FRENCH FIRST REPUBLIC SENIOR HUSSAR OFFICER'S SABRE OF PRESENTATION QUALITY, CIRCA 1800 with curved blade formed with a spear point, cut with a broad three-quarter length fuller on each face, etched and gilt with foliage, a wreath, and a trophy-of-arms on a blued panel on the lower portion on each side, the forte decorated with a gilt trellis pattern of flowers (the blueing worn on one side), and inscribed 'Klingenthal' on the back-edge, gilt-brass hilt in the German manner, comprising fluted quillon with shaped terminal, fluted langets and knuckle-guard, the former centring on a diamond-shaped panel, cap pommel fluted en suite and decorated with a trophy-of-arms partly enclosed by laurel (pommel retained by a later pin), original leather-covered banded wooden grip pierced with a pair of rivets with rosette washers, in its original leather-covered wooden scabbard with large gilt-brass mounts comprising locket and chape each fluted en suite with the hilt, the latter decorated with trophies-of-war, and a pair of middle bands each decorated with trophies en suite with the pommel cap, and a pair of brass rings for suspension (the scabbard split along the seam beneath the locket) 88cm; 34 1/2in blade PROVENANCE Dr Raymond Wargnier, sold Sotheby's Monaco, 23rd April 1990, lot 980. A very similar sword is illustrated C. Ariès 1969, 3 fascicule, fig. 2. For a similar blade and scabbard mounts see the Sabre of General La Fayette in the Museé de l'Armée, Paris.

A FINE NORTH ITALIAN ETCHED CLOSE HELMET FOR A CUIRASSIER, CIRCA 1620 formed of a two-piece skull joined along a high medial comb recessed at the apex to receive a finial (missing), embossed with a radiating pattern of shallow flutes, pierced over each ear with nine circular ventilation-holes in rosette formation and fitted at the nape with a plume-holder, obtusely-pointed peak, flat upper bevor and bevor attached by common pivots (the right replaced), the upper bevor and bevor each secured at the right side by a swivel-hook, the upper bevor pierced between a pair of large rectangular vision-slits and a semi-circular ventilation-slit for the mouth with alternating rows of circular and rectangular ventilation-holes of smaller size, two gorget-plates at the front, the lowest descending at its centre to a rounded point, and one gorget-plate at the rear (the second missing), the main edges of the helmet decorated with plain inward turns, its surfaces etched overall on a pearled ground amid branches of stylised symmetrical foliage with bands of guilloche enclosing trophies-of-arms, and involving at the point of the chin and at the centre of the gorget-plates respectively, a lion's mask and a lion grasping a further trophy-of-arms (the left of the peak and the left of the upper gorget-plates showing losses, the right of the peak, the left of the upper front gorget-plate and the front left of the lowest front gorget plate repaired with riveted internal patches, minor cracks and perforations, some patination and wear overall) Inv. no. A017. The etched decoration of this helmet closely resembles that of a fine, early 17th century Italian cuirass and reinforcing breastplate, probably belonging to the same armour, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Acc. Nos 14.25.796, 797 & 817. See S.V.Grancsay 1955, cat. no. 16, pp. 8-9).

A FINE ENGLISH SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN BY GEORGE (2)JONES, LONDON SILVER HALLMARKS FOR 1755 with earlier Dutch two-stage swamped barrel fitted with silver fore-sight formed as a bearded grotesque, chiselled over the breech with a scrollwork panel enclosing a seated warrior, an elaborate grotesque mask, a walled city and differing cavalry scenes arranged vertically beneath a band of acanthus, engraved breech tang incorporating a moulded back-sight, signed stepped lock engraved with border ornament and with a spray of foliage on the tail, sliding bolt safety-catch, figured walnut full stock carved with with a scrolling shell about the breech tang (the butt with scratches and bruising), full rococo silver mounts cast and chased in low relief, comprising classical trophy-of-arms side-plate, trigger-guard engraved with a flower on the bow and with rococo finial, butt-plate chiselled and engraved with flowers and shell ornament, three moulded ramrod-pipes and vacant escutcheon incorporating an expanded flowerhead (later ramrod) Inv. no. F029. George Jones is recorded in St Martin's Lane, Long Acre circa 1734-50 and at Newport Street in 1756. He had unproved guns seized by the Gunmaker's Company, which might explain his choice of the barrel on this gun.

A SILVER MOUNTED FLINTLOCK PISTOL BY E.NORTH, LONDON, LONDON SILVER HALLMARKS FOR 1743 with swamped two-stage barrel signed on a raised moulding terminating in a scallop over the breech and stamped with the maker's mark, gold vent, engraved barrel tang fitted with pronounced back-sight, rounded lock signed on a scroll and fitted with sliding safety-catch (incomplete), figured walnut full stock carved with a scallop shell about the barrel tang (fore-end cracked), full silver mounts cast and chased in low relief, comprising side-plate pierced with elaborate trophies-of-war, spurred pommel decorated with further trophies and fitted with grotesque mask cap, trigger-guard chased with a flower on the bow, a pair of moulded ramrod-pipes, vacant trophy-of-arms escutcheon, and original silver-tipped ebony ramrod (the silver parts rubbed, one barrel bolt missing, ramrod incomplete) 36cm; 14 1/8in Edward North was made free of the Gunmaker's Company in 1729, registered his mark in 1733 and became Master in 1753. It is likely that the vent was lined in gold and the back-sight added in the very early part of the pistol's working life.

JONES / & SON', engraved with a martial trophy and with stepped tail, semi-rainproof pan, an roller, figured walnut full stocks, chequered butts, engraved iron mounts including trigger-guards each retaining some blued finish, set triggers, silver escutcheons and barrel-bolt escutcheons, and original brass-mounted ramrods each with worm, Birmingham proof marks, in fitted mahogany case lined in green baize with some accessories including red leather-covered powder-flask and iron pincer-type bullet-mould, the exterior with shaped brass escutcheon with flush-fitting carrying handle. Other Notes: John Jones & Son are r corded as Birmingham makers from circa 1811 until 1830. They had a London retail outlet in The Minories between 1826 and 1829.

A 25-BORE SILVER-MOUNTED BRASS FLINTLOCK TURN-OFF PISTOL BY WILSON, LONDON, Second quarter of the 18th century, 12in. overall, with three-stage cannon barrel, the top of the breech engraved 'LONDON' above a spray of foliage and signed 'WILSON' below the pan, walnut butt carved with a shell in relief behind the barrel tang, silver mounts comprising trophy of arms side-plate and escutcheon, and grotesque mask cap, iron trigger-guard (some wear throughout), London proof marks, maker's mark of Richard Wilson. Other Notes: Richard Wilson was made free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1725 and served as Master in 1741. He held contracts for the East India Company, the Hudson's Bay Company and the Royal African Company. He died in 1766.

LONDON' in gold towards the breech, the gold-inlaid tap-action breech feeding from a short under-barrel tubular magazine, brass action with applied engraved steel panels on each side, that on the left with a safety-catch, that on the right signed 'STAUDENMAYER / LONDON' with cocking-lever, external mainspring and retaining traces of original case-hardened finish, trigger-guard engraved with trophy of arms, the top of the block with applied silver panel, and leather-covered butt reservoir (leather damaged), in original fitted mahogany case lined in green baize (compartment lid replaced) with accessories including stirrup-pump, and 26 1/2in. two-stage browned twist sighted smoothbore barrel with gold-inlaid line at the breech and signed 'STAUDENMAYER. LONDON' within a gold-inlaid ribbon, and original brass-mounted ramrod, the lid with Staudenmayer trade label with No. 35 Jermyn Street address and stating "From Mr. Mantons, Dover Street", the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle.

BECKWITH' and with stepped-tail, rainproof pan and roller (one cock and both steels replaced, both steels refaced, figured walnut pistolgrip half-stock with chequered grip, silver mounts including trigger-guard engraved with four partridge in a landscape and butt-plate engraved with a trophy of arms, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, and later brass-mounted ramrod (some discolouration to locks), London proof marks, in relined fitted oak case, probably original, with some accessories including leather-covered Hawksley powder-flask with white metal charger, and single leather shot-belt with Sykes Patent sprung brass charger, the lid with W.A. Beckwith trade, the exterior with circular brass escutcheon. Other Notes: William Andrew Beckwith was apprenticed to Wattel Clark in 1785 and made free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1801. He was master of the Gunmakers' Company in 1808, 1814, 1825 and 1840.

Other Notes: William (2) Brander, father of Martin Brander, was made free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1748. He was elected master in 1767, 1772 and 1779.

PARKER' on one side and 'HOLBORN / LONDON' on the other within a trophy of arms, thumb-piece safety-catches each also locking the steel, tap-lever on the left side of the actions, flat-sided walnut butts, and foliate engraved trigger-guards (some patches of corrosion to the barrels, some discolouration throughout), in relined and refitted mahogany case (applied brass corners and straps) with W. Parker trade label.

GRIERSON, LONDON, serial no. 100, circa 1800, 15in. overall, with slightly swamped octagonal twist sighted barrels each signed 'GRIERSON. GUN MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY' and engraved with a band of foliage at the breech, gold-lined touch-holes, each tang engraved with scrollwork and a small trophy of arms, signed engraved bolted flat bevelled locks each with stepped tail, semi-rainproof gold-lined pan and roller (one top-jaw, screw and steel expert replacements), finely figured walnut full stocks each with flat-sided butt and finely figured fore-end cap, engraved spurred trigger-guards each with pineapple finial, and horn-tipped rosewood ramrods, one with worm, London proof marks, in original fitted mahogany case lined with green baize, the lid with trade label of circa 1797-1838, with accessories including leather-covered three-way powder-flask, iron pincer bullet-mould, and bone-handled brush, the exterior with flush-fitting brass carrying handle.

BIVEN, LONDON, serial no. 154, Converted from flintlock, with 27 1/2in. rebrowned twist round barrel with sprung foliate engraved handle, tip-up hinged breech-block engraved with a martial trophy and with a single-leaf tangent rear-sight and turned lifting handle, the breech-block locking to the barrel by way of an interrupted thread, the barrel with two blued bands, that at the muzzle with the tunnel fore-sight, the other in the middle of the barrel with a further single-leaf tangent sight, tang engraved with foliage and a further martial trophy and fitted with a windage adjustable aperture sight, foliate engraved flat lock signed 'A.F. BIVEN / REGENT ST. WATERLOO PLACE', figured walnut full stock (working replacement) with raised cheek-piece, chequered grip and fore-end, iron mounts including scrolled trigger-guard and butt-plate each engraved with foliage and martial trophies, and retaining some original blued finish, and iron sling mounts.
