Dennis Brian Close, CBE (24 February 1931 - 13 September 2015) was an English first-class cricketer, the youngest man ever to play Test cricket for England. He was picked to play against New Zealand in July 1949, when he was 18 years old. Close went on to play 22 Test matches for England, captaining them seven times to six wins and one drawn test. Close also captained Yorkshire to four county championship titles - the main domestic trophy in English cricket. He later went on to captain Somerset, where he is widely credited with developing the county into a hard-playing team, and helping to mould Viv Richards and Ian Botham into the successful players they became. A George V hallmarked silver small twin handled trophy cup, Birmingham 1928, length 13.5cm, a similar smaller silver trophy cup, a 925 stamped hammered bowl set with turquoise coloured cabochons, a silver and velvet purse with later applied enamel decoration, and an oak card container with silver mounts inscribed 'Bridge', the two trophies and pin dish weight 5.9ozt/184g.(5).Additional InformationThe smallest trophy has a misshapen foot rim, a few surface dents and light surface scratches and is quite sprung. The larger trophy cup is in better condition with a misshapen foot rim. As detailed on the purse the enamel decoration is later, very crude and does not fit correctly. The 925 grade dish has some surface scratches to the turquoise coloured cabochons and the bridge box appears ok.

HORSTMANN & SONS, PHILADELPHIA, CIRCA 1865-70 with pipe-backed blade etched with laurel foliage, a tent, the motto 'E.Pluribus Unum', an American eagle, a US shield on a trophy-of-arms and oak foliage above the maker's details on one face and similar designs including a native American warrior on the reverse, the back-edge etched 'Iron Proof' (very small chips, patches of staining and light pitting), brass hilt comprising a pair of scrolling frontal bars joining the knuckle-guard, the latter rising to a cap pommel, decorated throughout with foliage in low relief and retaining traces of gilding, vertically fluted nickel grip, in its original steel scabbard with brass mounts boldly engraved with foliage on the front, the locket and middle-band fitted with a ring for suspension, and the latter with presentation inscription (the scabbard with areas of light pitting and patinated overall) 89.5 cm; 35 1/4 in blade The presentation inscription reads: 'Presented to Col. Geo. Gray by the Officers of the Mich. 6th Cavalry'. On 12th December 1862 the Michigan Cavalry Brigade was formed in Washington D.C. with Colonel George Gray commanding the 6th Regiment. In July the following year Gray fought with Brigadier General George A. Custer at the Battle of Gettysburg. Custer recalls the ability of Colonel Gray and the men of the 6th Cavalry in his action report: 'The 6th Michigan Cavalry rendered very good service by guarding both my right and left flank: also by supporting Battery 'M' under a very hot fire from the enemy's battery. Colonel Gray, commanding the regiment, was constantly seen wherever his presence was most needed and is deserving of special mention.'

A FINE GERMAN ETCHED PART ARMOUR WITH ETCHED DECORATION, DATED 1580, NUREMBURG comprising burgonet with one-piece skull rising to a high roped comb (showing slight delamination at its apex) and boxed to either side of it, fitted at its nape with tapering plume-holder and neck-guard of one lame at its the front with a pointed peak (cracked at its tip), struck at its left with the Nuremburg town mark and an armourer's mark, a crested close helmet in profile, and fitted at its left side with a single hinged cheek-piece (that of the right missing), collar formed of three lames front and rear, the lowest in each case deeper than the rest, opening at the right and hinged at the left, the lowest front plate struck with two marks en suite with those of the burgonet, fitted with an integral spaudler of six lames at the right and two (originally six) at the left; and backplate formed of a mainplate, well shaped to the shoulders and boxed at each side, stamped with two marks en suite with those of the burgonet, fitted at its lower edge with a waist lame flanged outwards to receive a culet of a single lame; decorated throughout at its main edges throughout with finely-roped inward turns and accompanying recessed borders, etched with two differing classical battle scenes on each side of the burgonet's comb, with detailed trophies-of-arms and trophies-of-hunting, cornucopia and foliage in a panel to either side of the comb, three diverging bands on the collar and the backplate and a single central band on the spaudlers, the rear plate of the collar and the backplate each including a dated scrollwork panel surmounted by an elaborate trophy-of-arms, further designs of trophies-of-arms and foliage in the borders at the main edges, the secondary edges decorated with panels of conventional foliage, all against a finely stippled previously blackened ground, and accompanied throughout by delicately engrailed borders (areas of light pitting) the burgonet 31.0 cm; 12 1/8 in high (3) The same mark appears, along with the Nuremburg town mark, on a morion acquired in Eisenach in 1889, now preserved at Hallwyl House, Stockholm.
