A fascinating and historically important collection of items relating to a rower from St Catharine's College, Oxford in the 1940's / 50's. All relating to a Cox; C. Graham Kaye.  Kaye's son writes: 'My father was at the  St Catherine's Society in Oxford from 1946 to 1952. (Now St Catharine's College). He coxed for the college during his time there.' The collection comprises of two commemorative rudders, each beautifully hand painted with the details of important race wins. The first, for ' St Catharine's Boat Club - Summer Eights 1949 - 2nd Eight, 6 Bumps ' and lists the races by date. To the rear of this first rudder is listed the crew, including Kaye. The second rudder, similarly decorated, reads ' St Catharine's Boat Club - Torpids 1950 ' and lists the races and crew. The second rudder unfortunately has an age-related split to the centre.  Also included in the collection is a framed 1949 presentation photograph beautifully presented with hand painted lettering and inset team photographs, a ' Marlow Regatta 1949 ' silver plated trophy and stand engraved for ' C. Graham Kaye - Cox ', and a host of related ephemera - Oxford Union menus, Rowing magazines, pamphlets, rowing programmes, event lists etc.  The son of Kaye continues: ' In Oxford on the Isis (Thames) there I a section called the gut. It is a chicane between stone walls. He got going through there to a fine art. Blades within an inch of the walls. While practising  they hit the walls with the blades a number of times. This usually lead to broken blades. The rudders commemorate some of their major rowing wins. The larger rudder is from a clinker built eight used in the winter and smaller from shell eight used in the summer. He and the 2 other college crews still hold an Oxford rowing record.' The final part of the collection includes two part-oars, kept by Kaye, and likely from the aforementioned story where oars were regularly broken through ' The Gut ', and two of Kayes Oxford boat club dress / dinner jackets - both with embroidered emblems and initials to the breast pockets. A truly fascinating collection.
