A Victorian Silver Trophy-Cup and Cover, by John and William F. Deakin, Sheffield, 1887 the bowl tapering and with two scroll handles, on spreading beaded foot and with central beaded knop, engraved on one side with a presentation inscription and on the other with a shooting scene, the detachable cover with a kneeling infantryman with firearm33cm high, 21oz 13dwt, 672grFully marked near handle and inside cover. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as as softening to the engraving. There is some bruising, particularly to the edges of the cover. The tip of the firearm which the figure on the finial holds is perhaps missing the tip.

Etched along the side "Pinehurst Country Club Holiday Week Tournament Runner Up President's Cup Won By, December 30th 1907. Pinehurst N.C." With an applied crest of the Pinehurst Country Club. Created for a golf tournament, the area where the name of the runner up would have been has been left blank. Maker's marks, key-shape date mark, sterling, "A1680," and "1 1/8 Pint" impressed along the underside.Height: 4 in x diameter: 5 1/2 in. Weight: 8.84 Troy oz.Condition: There is one dent along the footrim just below one of the handles. Light wear and light scratches throughout. Some tarnishing to the recessed areas of the work. Some residual, old polish in the recessed areas of the cup.
PUTNAM DAVID E. (1898-1918) American fighter pilot of World War I, a flying ace with thirteen confirmed victories. Known as the 'Ace of Aces', Putnam was shot down and killed at the young age of 19 by German ace Georg von Hantelmann. An extremely rare fountain pen ink signature ('David E. Putnam') with his squadron ('L. F. C. Escadrille MS 156') beneath, on a feint ruled 8vo page removed from a notebook, also signed by six other fighter pilots of World War I including Edgar Guerard Hamilton (1891-1984), Walter J. Shaffer (1892-1974) both of whom were pilots with the Lafayette Flying Corps, serving in the same squadron as Putnam; and Maurice Prevost (1887-1952) French pioneer aviator who won the first Schneider Trophy race in 1913, and the Gordon Bennett Trophy in the same year. Neatly inlaid and with an integral leaf. VG Provenance: The present signatures were obtained by the French aviator Amedee de Flers (b.1885) who saw service during World War I.
