Large Victorian silver trophy cup, William Hutton & Sons, London 1890, urn shape with flat cover, fluted finial, twin scrolled handles, engraved 'Championship Cup presented to The Magdalen Yard Tennis Club....', engraved with a tennis scene, fluted circular base, 36cm, 40 oz, on an ebonised hardwood plinth.Condition report:The dome of the cover has been compressed slightly so doesn't stand straight. The finial is chased slightly to resemble a tennis ball. The cup itself has good overall shape. Some dings to the spreading foot. Crisp engraving and marks are good. The tennis scene is a lively depiction. CONDITION REPORT There is no date mark on the trophy, neither a presentation date mark, the Elkington stamp indicates early to first half of 20th century. It was presented by Lt. Gran Premi Exposició Internacional de 1929".Bronze.Unsigned.The commemorative trophy-object is catalogued.Measurements: 18,5 x 11 x 4 cm.Son of the painter Alejandro Ferrant, Ángel was an outstanding sculptor of the Spanish avant-garde, initiator of kinetic and surrealist sculpture in Spain. He trained in Madrid, at the School of Arts and Crafts, at the San Fernando Academy and in the workshop of Aniceto Marinas, broadening his knowledge through trips around Europe and a stay in Paris. In 1918 he moved to La Coruña when he obtained a chair at the city's School of Arts and Crafts, later moving to Barcelona. In 1934 he returned to Madrid, where he settled permanently. His awards include the National Sculpture Prize (1926) and the sculpture prize at the Venice Biennale (1960). He exhibited with different groups such as Los Evolucionistas, the Asociación de Escultores y los Amigos de las Artes Nuevas (A.D.L.A.N.), and in the late 1940s he joined the Altamira School as a key artist. He is represented in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Museo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao and the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, among others.
