λ HAROLD DEARDEN (BRITISH 1888-1962)A FARMER AND HIS FAMILYOil on canvas61.5 x 56cm (24 x 22 in.)Unframed Harold Dearden, Lot 136-140 - The collection of works capture an intimate insight into the life of a farmer and his family, and the daily chores of everyday duties. Despite the serious subject matter showing the arduous nature of farm life Dearden has chosen a light pastel palette which brings to life the figures across the canvas creating an idyllic rural setting. Dearden studied at Rochdale School of Art before attending the Royal College of Art between 1910-1915 under the tutelage of Gerald Moira, the English muralist. Dearden moved to Swindon where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. He became head of the Swindon Art School from 1920 and president of Swindon Artist's Society. Dearden's fascination with people, families and everyday tasks is evident throughout his body of work. His depiction of Caribbean Family in Trafalgar Square and Indian Women in Trafalgar Square held in the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery are particularly striking. Condition Report: The canvas is unlined. Surface dirt and discolouration of the varnish, would benefit from a clean. Visible stretcher marks and areas of surface cracking, lifting paint and paint loss, particularly in the sky. Condition Report Disclaimer
