JOHN RUSSELL, R.A. (BRITISH, 1745-1806), Portrait of Captain Matthews, R.N. bust-length, in full dress uniform, signed and dated in pencil ‘J. Russell RA pinxt./1800-’ (upper left), pastel and bodycolour, 23½ x 165?8in. (59.7 x 42.2cm.), Of the several “Matthews” listed for this period, only one attained the rank of the sitter. John Matthews was made a Captain on 13th September 1793 and was still serving in this rank when he died on 21st March 1798, indicating this is a posthumous commemorative image. REG GAMMON (1894 - 1997 British) - Two men seated amongst wood "Will Dudman & Son, Woodman, Fernhurst c.1930 My Memory of Sussex Woodmen in the Rosary 1996", pastel and watercolour, signed with monogram and with handwritten card verso with a newspaper cutting of Reg Gammons obituary, 19.5cms x 28.5cms This was painted by Reg Gammon whilst he was living at The Rosary Nursing home in Somerset. A prolific artist, he painted right up to the time of his death at age 103.

BRIAN DE GRINEAU; pastel and watercolour drawing depicting an artillery division opening fire, signed lower right, 46 x 34cm, framed. Formerly the property of General Sir Miles Dempsey. Notes: Bryan de Grineau was the official war artist for the Illustrated London News and travelled extensively with the British 2nd Army and presented Dempsey with a number of pictures, some now exhibited Salisbury's Wardrobe Museum. Before the war, he was best known for his illustrations of motor racing.
