Attributed to Hugh Douglas Hamilton (Irish, 1739-1808) Portrait of a gentleman in a striped waistcoat and buff jacket in a painted feigned oval oil on canvas 25 x 20cm (10 x 8in) Other Notes: Hugh Douglas Hamilton was born in Dublin and studied at the Royal Dublin Society from 1750 until 1756, when he moved to London. There he found success as a portrait painter of the aristocracy, producing oval portraits in pastel and oil. He travelled to Rome in 1778 and returned to Dublin in 1792. Vertical line of wear to the left of the sitter. Craquelure overall. Oil on canvas which has been lined. Paint layer stable, slightly raised craquelure in areas. Small areas of paint loss have been retouched. Some wear and abrasion in areas. Retouchings slightly matte and discoloured. Frame in good condition.
