JAMES PATERSON RSA PRSW RWS (1854-1932) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN Pastel, chalk and pencil, signed and dated 1918 Original frame and mount with Aitken Dott label verso 36cm x 26cm Note : After settling in Edinburgh, James Paterson drew several accomplished portrait sketches of high-profile contemporaries including a self-portrait drawing (1916) in pastel, chalk and pencil which is now in the collection of The National Galleries Of Scotland. The portrait offered here is an outstanding example of his characteristic style as a draughtsman. Paterson has used hatching in red and grey chalk to model the face and give it depth.James Paterson`s work was exhibited at The Kelvingrove Gallery as part of the major "Glasgow Boys" Exhibition (2010) and at The Hunterian Art Gallery (Glasgow) in "James Paterson : Works From The Artists Studio" (2010)-an exhibition dedicated entirely to his own work.

Especially influenced by Chinese art when she visited China for the first time in 1922. Taught in Peking 1922-1924 and stayed in China until 1937. Rented a studio in Greengate Close (Kirkcudbright) from Jessie M King. Wrote Buddhist Sculptures at the Yen Kang Caves with Mary Mullikin, 1935 and The Nine Sacred Mountains of China, 1973.
HUGH DOUGLAS HAMILTON (1736-1808) PORTRAIT OF ANNA TONELLI NÉE NISTRI bust length in a white turban and lace trimmed white dress, with inscription in a contemporary hand on the backboard Anna Tonelli ..... in London 1796, pastel, oval, 24 x 20.5cm The sitter, Anna Tonelli (Florence c1763-1846) was an accomplished portraitist in miniature and pastel. She came into contact with several English Grand Tourists in Italy in the 1780`s and there met Hamilton whose influence is apparent in her work. She was employed by Lord Clive and lived in London from 1794-97 before travelling with the Clive family to India in 1798. ++In fine condition in good quality later carved giltwood frame with sanded spandrels
§ YANKILEVSKY, VLADIMIR (B. 1938) Composition 1 and Composition 2, from the "Woman by the Sea" series, two works, each signed and dated 1985. Each oil pastel on paper, each measuring 49.5 by 54.5 cm. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the previous owner. Private collection, Germany. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the artist.
LUKOMSKI, GEORGI (1884-1952) The Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin in Tallinn and Ruins, two works, each signed, one further inscribed "1779", the other indistinctly inscribed in Cyrillic, c. 1920s. One pencil and watercolour on paper, the other pencil and pastel on grey paper, measuring 27 by 19 cm and 25 by 18.5 cm respectively.
Attributed to Daniel Gardner (British, 1750-1805) Miss Elizabeth Arne Hall, later Mrs John Morse, (b.1775) in a Cream Dress and Bonnet with Blue Ribbons, playing with her Black-and-White Spaniel, pastel, 51 x 41cm (19.89 x 15.99in). Provenance: By descent from the sitter within the Morse family, Sprowston Hall, Norfolk (according to old labels on the reverse). Miss Elizabeth Arne Hall was the only daugher of Thomas Hall, a General in the English Army. She was born on 17 November 1775 and in 1800 married John Morse of Sprowston Hall, Norfolk
