Frank Thomas Copnall (British, 1870-1947) Almost home pastel and watercolour, signed and dated `95 lower right 29½ x 48in. (75 x 122cm.) * The scale and quality of this atmospheric work suggests that it may have been an exhibition piece. The artist exhibited widely at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Arts and the Walker Gallery, Liverpool, and was president of the Liverpool Art Club. He was best known for his later portrait work. Présent au Salon des Artistes Français dès 1883 puis à la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. A l`étranger il est membre correspondant de la Sécession munichoise dès 1893 et participe à la Libre Esthétique à Bruxelles en 1897.Ses voyages en Sicile, Grèce, Palestine et Italie dès 1897 influencent durablement son oeuvre et l`invitent à des compositions plus mystérieuses comme en témoigne notre composition.Notre paysage crépusculaire à la nymphe sur pastel est un topos de l`œuvre de Ménard : nous retrouvons cette ambiance élégiaque et dorée de fin de jour dans d`autres compositions comme Baigneuses dans la pinède conservé à Beauvais, musée départemental de l`Oise (pastel, 134 x 89 cm) ou encore L`Age d`Or conservé à Paris, musée d`Orsay (toile, 352 x 287 cm).Notons que notre pastel sur toile est remarquable par sa technique originale, mais connue chez Ménard : la matière a été grattée en réserve laissant deviner le fond de la toile préparée, renforçant aussi l`impression vaporeuse et nostalgique de la scène
