Lewis; executed for the fiftieth anniversary edition published by HarperCollins in 2000. Christian Birmingham graduated in illustration from Exeter College of Art and Design in 1991. He quickly gained his first commission, to provide illustrations for an edition of 'The Night Before Christmas', of which more than two million copies have been sold. He has been shortlisted for the Kurt Maschler and Kate Greenaway illustration awards and he won both the Smarties Prize and Whitbread Children's Book of the Year Award. Other books illustrated by the artist include: 'A Christmas Carol'; 'Oliver Twist'; 'Sleeping Beauty'; and 'Wenceslas and The Snow Queen'. Christian Birmingham's use of chalk pastel gives a wonderful luminosity to the evocative festive images for which he is so well-known. (1)
