Ray Lowry (British, 1944-2008): A Sketchbook Containing Original Sketches Relating To The Clash On Tour In The USA,1979,approx. 60pps., containing mostly pen and black ink sketches/studies but approximately fifteen coloured ink or pastel sketches, a few landscapes but mostly partial or whole studies of venue interiors and various members of The Clash onstage, including St. Paul Civic Center, 11-12th September and Detroit Masonic Temple, 17th September, some pages variously annotated and with a few comments, such as, The Human Bomb - A man making a living blowing himself up then being revived with oxygen - Americans do the most fucking stupid thing you can as loudly and bad as possible for money, some sketches with schematics for later colouring, hardback cover affixed with a backstage pass for Detroit, 17th September, size A4Footnotes:Provenance:Offered for sale by the artist's son.Cartoonist, illustrator and satirist Ray Lowry first met the Clash at the Electric Circus, Manchester in 1976, during the 'Anarchy' tour with the Sex Pistols. Struck by the Clash's attitude and music, Lowry befriended the band and this led to them inviting him to accompany them on their US tour in September-October 1979. Joe Strummer nicknamed Ray 'war artist', comparing him to a war correspondent, recording what he saw whilst on the road with them. This, and the following lot in this auction, are from a series of sketchbooks compiled on the tour. Ray had previously become involved with the burgeoning UK underground press in the late 60s and provided cartoons to the likes of Oz and International Times. This later led to a long relationship with the New Musical Express (NME), producing a weekly cartoon strip and whilst on the Clash's US tour he provided regular illustrated reports on events for the paper. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 2 April 1954, lot 10 (as 'H.D. Hamilton, R.H.A.'), sold for £3. 3 shillings.; Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 20 December 1962, lot 44 (as 'Hugh Douglas Hamilton, R.H.A.).; Private Collection, UK. Note: A near contemporary copy by an unknown hand after Hugh Douglas Hamilton’s original composition - see Christie's, London, 10 July 2014, lot 192, which is included in Neil Jeffares, 'Dictionary of Pastellists before 1800', online edition, J.375.1559 (https://www.pastellists.com/Articles/Hamilton1.pdf).The La Touches, of French Huguenot origin, were one of the most important families in Irish Georgian society and were prominent landowners, bankers and patrons of the arts. In 1762, David (the third David of the La Touche dynasty) married Elizabeth, daughter of Rt Rev. Dr George Marlay, Bishop of Dromore. He later purchased a 300 acre estate in Rathfarnham, Dublin. He had a distinguished career in the Irish Parliament representing banking interests, and in 1783 was nominated as the first Governor of the Bank of Ireland and was also elected to the Privy Council of Ireland.Hugh Douglas Hamilton had a long association with the La Touche family; Neil Jeffares lists over a dozen known portraits of various generations (see N. Jeffares, ‘Hugh Douglas Hamilton', Online Dictionary of Pastellists before 1800, pp.1-2.). The family were linked to the Dublin Society Drawing School and it was probably here that they first met Hamilton as a young artist. The earliest known portrait of a member of the La Touche family by Hamilton is of the present sitter, dating to c.1765 (National Gallery of Ireland, no.7237). Hamilton executed several other portraits of David La Touche including another oval pastel which is similar to the present work (see Sotheby’s, London, 14 July 1988, lot 61) and a later full-length portrait in oil, c.1802-3 (Bank of Ireland). We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for his assistance with this catalogue note. Please refer to department for condition report

William Kentridge (born 1955)Colonial Landscape - Waterfall, 1995-1996 signed 'KENTRIDGE' (lower right)charcoal and pastel on paper 122 x 160cm (48 1/16 x 63in).Footnotes:ProvenanceGoodman Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa;Private Collection, London;Acquired from the above by the current owner.ExhibitedRome, Cittá/ Natura: mostra internazionale di Arte Contemporanea' , 21 April - 23 June, 1997.LiteratureCarolyn Christov-Bakargiev, William Kentridge, (Brussels: Société des Expositions du Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, 1998), p. 182 (illustrated)William Kentridge, 1997, CD-ROM, (Johannesburg: David Krut Publishing, reproduced along with various images of drawings and graphics)The present lot is one of several drawings created by William Kentridge between 1995-1996 for his Colonial Landscape series. The series came after the theatre production, Faustus in Africa (1994), where Kentridge looked at depictions of Southern African landscapes in the era of colonisation. For example, the 1891 publication Africa and Its Exploration: As Told by its Explorers by Mungo Park, David Livingstone and others featured several engravings of idealistic scenes in Southern Africa. The engravings were produced and translated by professional engravers in London and were also reproduced in The Illustrated London News. The studies of Victoria Falls by Thomas Baines (1820-1875) are arguably comparable to Kentridge's Waterfalls from his Colonial Landscape series. In the early 1860s Baines produced a handful of sketches and oil paintings from his expedition along the Zambezi to Victoria Falls. These images were romanticised and idealistic visions of the Southern African landscape, that can be argued as often disguising the exploitative nature and brutality behind colonial rule. The imagery referred to here has undergone manifold technical steps in its production from sketch to engraving, all under the colonial, romanticised gaze encompassed by its creators. Parallel to this, the images circulated in Great Britain but were also redistributed back to Southern Africa. Kentridge has admitted to being fascinated with this geographic migration of colonial imagery, stating 'I was interested partly in the translations, the temporal and geographic dislocations that happen...'. Thus, the Colonial Landscape series became much more than a simple critique of colonialism. The works in this series were all created on high-quality, handmade Korean paper with deckled edges at the upper and lower margins. It's rare to find a part of the paper that hasn't been worked in with charcoal, which typifies the dense style that bleeds across the entire sheet and masterfully utilises the qualities of the charcoal, including the smudging and erasure that are evident so often in his work.'But if there hadn't been that first almost sensual pleasure in what it is to be working with that charcoal dust, that you can put into the spew of a waterfall, and the way lines in an engraving or in a drawing are like the lines of the sediment of a rock, and the way the rock meets the idea of a drawing or a graphic mark halfway, and the way the erasure works and a lot of other things – and, yes, obviously it relates to colonial images of Africa, but it's also a treat. A form in which I could let myself draw the beautiful, big landscapes, rather than the bleak, flat Highveld landscape.'Within this landscape Kentridge includes a large, red circle with associated red marks which dominate the page and forces the viewers gaze inwards. 'The new red marks are both beacons erected in the landscape and the surveyor's theodolite markings of the image in the viewfinder'. Kentridge has even stated that these red marks are 'bruising on the landscape', conjuring notions of conflict within a sublime landscape. Kentridge also puts his own stamp on the landscape by using motifs that he repeats throughout his oeuvre such as a megaphone and pylon that are all visible on the horizon. BibliographyMargaret K. William Kentridge (born 1955)Untitled (Two Drawings from Weighing and Wanting), 1997-98 each signed 'KENTRIDGE' (lower left and lower right)charcoal and pastel on cut and torn paper, adhered to mat board by the artist 33 x 40cm (13 x 15 3/4in) each.Footnotes:ProvenanceGoodman Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa;Private Collection, New York;Acquired from the above by the current owner.LiteratureHugh Davies and William Kentridge, William Kentridge: Weighing...and Wanting, (San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, 2000), pp.36-37 (illustrated). The drawings and the film that comprise WEIGHING ... and WANTING, all dated 1997, center around Kentridge's character Soho Eckstein, a broad-shouldered, white South African industrialist whose self-assured place in the world has been dismantled by the ascendancy of the African National Congress and condemnation of apartheid. Eckstein's story is related through his personal meditations on a failed love affair, the Johannesburg landscape which stands as a silent witness to the atrocities of the apartheid era, and his own internal psychic landscape, represented by images of MRI brain scans. The title of the exhibition refers to a biblical episode in which a disembodied hand appears before King Belshazzar of Babylon and writes a message on the wall. It reads, 'You have been weighed in the balance and found wanting, for you have not humbled your heart before God, so your kingdom has come to an end.'The present lot is reproduced in black and white in the catalogue for WEIGHING...and WANTING, which accompanied the exhibition of the same title (28 January - 12 April 1998). Lily Snowden-Fine Geraldine, 2022 Acrylic on Paper Signed recto, further signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   Lily Snowden-Fine is a British/Canadian painter currently based between London and Vancouver. Her work is inspired by faces and hands, and the subtle emotions that can be given away by intricate poses. She draws from her love of antiques, found imagery and family photographs, while using playful colours inspired by the joy and warmth of 20th century painting. Her use of colour, brush strokes, and subtle poses communicate to the viewer an image of nostalgia for a fleeting moment; mundane memories inflated into cherished imagery after life has moved far enough away for them to feel like a relic of a past life.   Education   2022-2023, The Drawing Year postgraduate program, The Royal Drawing School, London, UK 2015-2019, OCAD University, Bachelor of Design, Illustration, Toronto, ON   Select Exhibitions/Awards   2022, Royal Watercolour Society Open 2022, Bankside Gallery, London, UK 2022, Jackson's Painting Prize, Shortlist 2020, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Mall Galleries, London, UK   Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork   The four portraits began as quick pastel studies, gathering the essence of each person in broad strokes. Daniel Jensen Untitled (1), 2022 Wax Pastel on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   b. 1972 in Malmö, SE Lives and works in Stockholm, SE Daniel Jensen's sculptures, paintings and drawings explore issues related to fractal urban structure and detritus which witness our existence. His broader artistic practice is allied with subjects like imperfection, failure and transformation. The artist's "objet trouvé" alternate between the recognisable and the abstract where under esteemed perishable materials are assembled in poised and fragile compositions. The works have a poetic and liberating non-hierarchal expression without concept of any specific narrative, which constitutes changes in our perception of utility, lifespan and status. Daniel Jensen Untitled (2), 2022 Wax Pastel on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   b. His works are entwined and unconstrained, placing the viewer in an odd state of amusement, wonder and contemplation.   Education   1997-2001 The National Academy of Fine Art, Oslo, NO 2000-2001 Valand School of Fine Art, Gothenburg, SE   Select Exhibitions/Awards   2022 - L21 Gallery, Palma de Mallorca, ES 2022 - Björkholmen Gallery, Stockholm, SE, Everything is Inverted (solo) 2021 - Olseröds Konsthall, Olseröd, SE, 4 2020 - Monti 8, Latina, IT, Fireworks (solo) 2019 - Björkholmen Gallery, Stockholm, SE, Current Events (solo) 2019 - Ronneby Konsthall, Ronneby, SE, Your Credit Card Has Been Cancelled (solo) 2019 - The Dot Project, London, UK, Sleep on the Wind 2019 - KANT, Copenhagen, DK, A Take on Paper 2018 - Björkholmen Gallery, Stockholm, SE, Air Conditioning (solo) 2018 - BEERS London, London, UK, Happy Depression, (two-person show with Mark Posey) 2018 - Rizzuto Gallery, Palermo, IT, All You Can See 2017 - L21 Gallery, Palma de Mallorca, ES, 20 cm From The Ground 2017 - KANT, Copenhagen, DK, Between The Line And The Lavish 2017 - BEERS London, London, UK, 75 Works On Paper 2017 - Richard Heller Gallery, Los Angeles, US, Beheaded 2017 - Galerie L'inlassable, Paris, FR, Micro Salon #7 2017 - Mountain Gallery, New York, US, HyperMagic   Gallery Representation   Björkholmen Gallery, Stockholm, SE Monti 8, Latina, IT Message from Art On A Postcard: Please do not bid if you intend to sell on the artwork. Two paintings in particular have been staple points of reference for some time; Caravaggio's 'Still life with basket of fruit' and Fragonard's 'Le petite parc'. I love the way the basket in Caravaggio's painting appears to fall out of the painting and invade your space, modern day advertising seems to do something similar. An advert for Costa or Mcdonalds uses the same tactics Caravaggio did in 1599. I love the atmosphere in Fragonard's 'Le petite parc painting, and I've tried to incorporate that particular feeling into some of my landscapes and fairground paintings. A gothic atmosphere permeates the work and although the emphasis from painting to painting alters slightly, memory, decadence, and a dream like unreality are core recurring themes. Richard J Butler Sunset With Strata, 2022 Mixed Media on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   Drawing inspiration from ancient art and mythology, Richard J. Butler's alluring paintings skirt the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Constructed of intricate surfaces built up in layers of grated pastel, acrylic gel and paint, his work often depicts figures and silhouettes that seem to dissolve within vast colour fields. Over the past seven years, the artist has developed a unique technique which consists of pressing large packing blankets onto the still wet painting, a method similar to that of decalcomania. The blankets' vertical lines are transferred to the painted surface, leaving a systematic imprint on the canvas whilst distorting the image. When viewed from a distance, recognisable forms appear while up-close, miniature abstract landscapes abound, creating sensual and hallucinatory surfaces that explore painting's illusionistic potential. Butler's work is held in private collections in the UK, USA, France and Belgium. He has exhibited with Bowman Sculpture, London; Masterpiece Art Fair, London; Modernity Stockholm, London; Hannah Barry Gallery, London; J. Hammond Projects, London; Kreuzberg Pavilion, Berlin; KARST, Plymouth.   Education   Chelsea College of Art and Design, London (BA Fine Art), 2005-2008 Leeds College of Art & Design, Leeds (Foundation Diploma in Art and Design), 2004-2005   Select Exhibitions/Awards   Masterpiece Art Fair, Bowman Sculpture, London 2022 When Matter Becomes Form, Bowman Sculpture x Canopy Collections, London 2022 There Are No Strangers Here, Canopy Collections x Modernity, London 2021 Spring Syllabus, J Hammond Projects, London 2018 The Unlimited Dream Company, Hannah Barry Gallery, London 2017 The Brightness is the Colour, NAM project, Milan 2016 Richard J. Andy Swani Wish You Were Here - Dinosaur Apocalypse, 2022 Indian Ink, Oil Pastel and Acrylic on Paper Signed verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About   Andy Swani was born in Birmingham in 1964, he currently works as an artist, painter, decorator, muralist and printmaker, living in East London. His work is a primal glorification of creation, expressing the wonder of the world, together with an awareness of its inevitable end. Having had some success with traditional still-life painting, mostly of dead fish, which tempered the sensual delights of perception with reminders of mortality, Andy began making paintings in an overtly decorative way, using childlike, naïve representations of creatures and environments as a basis for a joyous and dread filled dialogue with History, Art and lived experience. Influences from around the world and the European premodern age were able to flood into his work, though still rooted in the European painting tradition of Giotto, Goya and Matisse. Examples of his new work were included in The Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibitions of both 2021 & 2022. One of these works, a woodcut, 'Crocodiles (Fuchsia on Yellow)', is being used by The Royal Academy of Arts in its 2023 calendar. Education   1983 - 1986 - North East London Polytechnic - Ba Hons Fine Art 1982 - 1983 - Bournville School of Arts and Crafts - Arts Foundation Course Select Exhibitions/Awards   2022 - Royal Academy of Arts - Summer Exhibition 2021 - Royal Academy of Arts - Summer Exhibition 2013 - Burning Bright - Saatchi online - Hyatt Regency London 2003 - Really - Transition Gallery - London -Sense and Sensibility - Transition Gallery London 2001 - Discerning Eye - Mall Gallery - London Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork   'Wish You Were Here - Dinosaur Apocalypse' - Based on an image developed in lockdown, when the precarious nature of our civilisation was made more palpable than usual, it was originally produced as a woodcut. To convey similar qualities to the gouging and cutting of a woodcut, a 'scraperboard' technique was used for this postcard. The surface was prepared by covering it with a layer of yellow ochre oil pastel which was then painted over with black Indian ink. The ink surface was then scraped and scratched with a toothpick to reveal the ochre beneath. Layers of fixative were then applied to stabilise the surface. Edition (Second place award), 2017,London Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork The artist dealing with loneliness of the individual of the present-day; makes us confront with the personal stories of her fragile, perturbed, melancholic, heroes and heroines who refer to solitude. Some of these moments that Serpil dwells on, there are some personal eccentricities, which appear in a passive- aggressive way. Even sometimes the personas of her painting make us think that they are taking a kind of pleasure to procreate drama. They can seem indifferent in a case or atmosphere where they are supposed to take pleasure. In a moment that seems ideal, beautiful or happy they can sabotage it. These heroes, who ruin their own pastel world, reflect the conflicts that we deal with, in our daily routine.     Message from Art On A Postcard: Please do not bid if you intend to sell on the artwork. Piers Tobias Alsop Untitled (4), 2022 Oil, Acrylic and Pastel on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   Alsop works across painting, drawing and collage. His approach sees him use the canvas as an imaginary set, giving illusory form to a current frame of mind. A spectrum of realism is on display from flat abstraction to detailed representation, to raking perspective. Sometimes reminiscent of prop facades, the work refers to fictions we hold in our collective conscience. Sara Bonache Ríos Moonflower, 2022 Pastel on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   Sara Bonache (b. 1991) lives and works in Barcelona. She is visual artist and co-director of Unica editions, an independent artists' book publisher. Her art practice explores the relationship between the human body and nature by dissolving the boundaries between these two iconographies, seeking new forms through metamorphosis and metaphor. Known and unknown shapes intertwine, constantly playing with each other and subverting existing meanings. At this exchange, one image hides another. The body and the care, the spiritual and the earthly. Medicine and magic converge in the elaboration of a chimerical and scientific imaginary at the same time, as a way to explore our relationship to the natural world, our bodies and their life cycles.   Education   BA Fine Arts - Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Barcelona (2009 - 2014)   Select Exhibitions/Awards   A selection of national and international group shows include: Life In Colour, The Room, London 2022; Needful things, Rodzlo Gallery, Berlin 2022; Todo es de color, The Curators Room, Amsterdam 2022; Preludios de mi lira, CAC La Sala, Vilanova i la Geltrú 2022; The best design of the year, Design Museum, Barcelona 2021; III International Nasevo Prize, Senda Gallery, Barcelona 2021; Hotel x Hotel Kippenberger Tribute, Carmen Thyssen Museum, Malaga 2017 and University Selection 2014, Tsukuba University, Japan 2015, among others. She has participated in the Art and Breakfast fair (Malaga, 2017) and Arts Libris fair (Barcelona, 2021). She was nominated for the Arts FAD Prize 2021 and she was a finalist in the XVI Francesc Gimeno Painting Prize 2021. She has also recently been nominated for the Fundació Vila Casas Painting Prize 2022. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork   "Candles" and "Moonflower" explore the elements of metamorphosis within the natural world. In these works, the Element of fire talks about the mutability and changing nature of forms. The violence and lushness of nature become visible through these new appearances and their connotations. As a result, familiar plants change into hallucinatory and magical, where their limits are diluted to give way to analogy. Lily Snowden-Fine James, 2022 Acrylic on Paper Signed recto, further signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   Lily Snowden-Fine is a British/Canadian painter currently based between London and Vancouver. Her work is inspired by faces and hands, and the subtle emotions that can be given away by intricate poses.
