C. AD 618-907. Tang Dynasty. Two full-figured court attendant terracottas. Both of these court attendant ladies are posed with both hands held up in front of the torso, one bare and one covered by a long sleeve. Both figures figure are presented wearing a long vest, tied to the waist, and an under layer with long sleeves. Each lady is highly detailed with her robes picked out in pastel tones, her upturned shoes a deep black and her hair arranged in an elaborate double bun updo. Court attendants served an inportant role in the management of the imperial palace’s private quarters. During the Tang period service as a court attendant conveyed high status to the women who had served and increased their marriage prospects. This piece has been precisely dated having undergone Thermo Luminescence analysis by Ralf Kotalla, an independent German Laboratory. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements. Its TL certificate with full report will also accompany this lot. Both of these ladies are posed standing, facing forward with each hand tucked into the opposite sleeve. Both figures figure are presented wearing a dress with full skirts and over-length hanging sleeves. Each lady is highly detailed with her robes picked out in pastel tones and her hair arranged in an elaborate double bun updo suggesting that she was a court attendant. Court attendants served an inportant role in the management of the imperial palace’s private quarters. During the Tang period service as a court attendant conveyed high status to the women who had served and increased their marriage prospects. Follower of Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757) Italian Portrait of a fashionable young lady wearing a cap decorated with a feather plume and a scallop shell, head and shoulders turned to sinister Pastel, 44cm by 36cm Contained in a decorative gesso frame See illustration . The back of the picture has been covered with paper, however where it is loose (top corner) it is apparent that the sheet has been laid onto canvas. As such, there is no evidence of cockling to the front and some subtle indication of the weave of the canvas is perceptible. Some surface dirt but the image remains broadly in good order. With some minor rubbing to the edges of the sheet. Not examined out of the frame.
A Pair of Staffordshire Pottery Pen Holders, late 19th century, modelled as recumbent greyhounds on blue washed cushion bases, 19cm long; A Similar Pair of Seated Greyhounds, 18cm high; A Pair of Poodle Groups; and A Small Cottage (7). Both seated Greyhounds with a small chip to one ear. Both pen holders with damage, one with a large section re glued across the back legs. The other with the muzzle re glued. Poodles in good condition. Pastel burner also in good condition.

REGO (PAULA)Collection of letters, photographs, ephemera and books assembled by Rego's friend David Wright, including 10 autograph letters signed, 4 typed letters signed, 16 postcards or notecards, several Christmas cards, 24 photographs, newspaper clippings, vernissage invitations, 18 books and exhibition catalogues (of which 13 inscribed by Rego to Wright), and a set of her Jane Eyre stamps for the Royal Mail, the letters mostly London, 1997 to 2009Footnotes:'I HAVE DONE DRAWINGS FROM MY HEAD TO BEGIN WITH CONCENTRATING VERY HARD' - an evocative series of letters from Paula Rego to David Wright, from the 1990s to his death in 2013. They met in the 1950s when both studying at the Slade School of Fine Art, forming a close and lasting friendship. A charming series of photographs show them with other friends on the beach, probably in Portugal. Wright went on to become an artist, teacher, textile and architectural designer and gallery director.The many subjects of the letters include: the Royal College ('the students are under terrifying pressure to 'SUCCEED''), her show in Lisbon ('a tremendous success... over 40 thousand people have been to it'), and a trip to the Venice Biennale ('so depressing all that junk... I hope to represent Portugal there in two years time'), 1997; her 'commission for an 18thC. chapel in the Presidents palace in Lisbon [the Palace of Belém]. He asked me. Tiny pictures... The story is the life of The Virgin Mary... I can handle pastel and find a freedom in this medium never managed before', 2002; the film Frida ('I thought Frida absurd. How can you make a film about an artist and not show her working?'), 2003; painting David Hare for the NPG ('he was good to work with and unpretentious and so punctual') and the President of Portugal ('a disaster. I shall not set foot in Portugal for quite a while I am so ashamed'), 2006; death ('I ask my children not to let there be a memorial service for me at The Slade'); the Thresholds exhibition she curated at the Whitechapel ('Don't know the name of the artists but am picking what I like. Major Charles Hodgkinson Smith (1877-1952), pastel on paper, head and shoulders half-profile portrait to right, of a WWI military gentleman in uniform, signed in pencil lower left, some spotting to background, 58.5 x 48 cm (23 x 19 ins), framed and glazed, manuscript note on backboard pertaining to the sitterQty: (1)NOTESMajor Charles Hodgkinson Smith (1877-1952) was the eldest son of Major General Charles Hodgkinson Smith (1826-1897), who was in command of the Horse Artillery, London District at the time of his son's birth. The Major's military career commenced in 1899 when he joined the yeoman cavalry at the start of the Boer War, receiving a commission in the Royal Artillery the following year and serving until 1904, when he retired in favour of agricultural pursuits. At the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 he rejoined the Royal Artillery (Reserve of Officers), and fought at Ypres, amongst other places. In 1916 he was invalided home, although he was later sent to Egypt with the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. He served, therefore, in three branches of the armed forces - the Cavalry, the Artillery and the Air Force - and saw a great deal of active service. He was awarded a number of medals, including two South African medals, the Victory Medal and the Croix de Guerre, and was also made a Member of the British Empire. He married and had one daughter, but no son to carry on the family tradition of serving in the Royal Artillery.
