JAROSLAV PANUÅ KA 1872 - 1958: CONGRESS OF DISEASES Ca. 1903 Washed pastel, pencil, cardboard 45 x 62 cm Signed: Lower left "PanuÅ¡ka" Jaroslav PanuÅ¡ka completely adopted the virtuoso landscape style from his teacher Julius MaÅ™ák, but he significantly deviated from the ranks of his peers with his symbolist-decadent work. Today, this work is one of his most valuable. He painted mysterious dramatic sessions of beings from another world - ghosts, vampires, labyrinths and watermen, but he was also able to visualize the darkest corners of the mind through the personification of fear, death and disease. The work of the Congress of Diseases works only with the jovial relaxation of the participants, who meet as old friends by the pond. Death reaches out to the staggering being and gives instructions as an experienced entertainer. Some observers reveal a familiar landscape - he chose the same venue for his work "Plague" (1903).
VOJTÄšCH ERDÉLYI 1891 - 1955: TREE BY THE RIVER Ca. 1930 Oil on canvas 110 x 100 cm Signed: Lower right "Erdélyi" VojtÄ›ch Erdélyi was one of the most important representatives of Transcarpathian art. He was born in Zahattia, Kingdom of Hungary, and studied art in Budapest. He founded the Transcarpathian Institute of Arts. The lovely coloristic landscapes that VojtÄ›ch Erdélyi painted are based on their own uniqueness. Moments in the landscape show very effective means of expression and ingenious artistic shortcuts, sometimes with features of cubism. Through expressionist touches, rippled water and tightly contoured trees, it captures a moment on the river bank that has decided to immortalize in a generous format in atmospheric pastel accents. It is a very suggestive canvas with obvious painting experience and distinctly modernist features.
VLADIMÍR LEBEDÄšV 1891 - 1967: A POLICEWOMAN Ca. 1920 - 1925 Watercolour, pastel, paper 40,5 x 29 cm Signed: Lower left in cyrillic "VL" Vladimír LebedÄ›v gained public admiration mainly thanks to illustrations of children's books. He became the initiator of an independent stream of Soviet graphics, especially posters. A prominent place in Lebedev's work belongs to the series Street Types and Thematic Drawings on the Theme of the New Economic Policy. Satirical drawings such as the Policewoman show especially middle-class people who "enjoy life as long as they can". Lebedev exaggerated the characteristic elements of the individual and created caricatures of ordinary people and officials who prospered in the new economic policy.
FRANTIÅ EK URBAN 1868 - 1919: MADONNA WITH A CHILD 1917 Watercolour, coloured pencils, paper 61,5 x 46 cm Signed: Lower right "F Urban - 1917" FrantiÅ¡ek Urban studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague under FrantiÅ¡ek ŽeníÅ¡ek. He designed the Austrian hundred crown bill, shares, diplomas and posters, won the competition for the decoration of the windows of the church of St. Ludmila in Prague, participated in the decoration of many other, not only sacral buildings, including the Church of St. Barbora and the paintings of the chapel in the VlaÅ¡ský dvor in Kutná Hora, the ceiling of the theater in Vinohrady or the curtains of the theater in LitomyÅ¡l and Pardubice. FrantiÅ¡ek Urban's religious and symbolist motifs could only be described as handwritten. They are dominated by Art Nouveau influence, soft shading, pastel colors and a solid elegant contour.
