Harold Riley (b.1934) - 'The Statue In The Square', pastel, signed and dated 87, inset in modern gilt frame, 58x58cm (illustrated) NB Abraham Lincoln statute in Manchester it was argued that Manchester was an appropriate city for such a statute because of its connections with Lincoln. This with reference to the sacrifices that Lancashire cotton operatives had made in support of the Union and Abolition of Slavery during the American Civil War, a sacrifice that Lincoln himself acknowledged. The statue was paid for by Charles Taft, Cincinnati, c.1916
