She joined the London Group in 1922, where she met the Belgian brothers Gustave and Léon De Smet, apparently declaring that 'English art then bored me to tears'. In 1926 she moved to Paris and changed her name, as a tribute to the Romanesque basilica in the town of the same name in Burgundy, residing there until the outbreak of war. At the time the present work was executed, Vézelay was in an intense relationship with the surrealist André Masson whose ideas and creativity influenced her greatly. In the early 1930s she became one of only a few British members of Abstraction-Création and began a long working relationship with Jean Arp and his wife Sophie. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A wealthy and controlling man, Rhudde was strongly opposed to the proposed marriage of his granddaughter Maria Bicknell to the artist John Constable on the grounds that Constables father and he had quarrelled, Maria's family were socially superior whereas the Constable's were 'trade' and John Constable was a friend of an atheist. When they eventually married, in spite of his long hostility to the union, in 1816, Rhudde accepted the fact and was to bequeath Maria Constable £4000 on his death three years later. Rhudde married Mary Shergold (1738-1811). Their daughter Harriet married Edward Farnham of Quorndon, Leicestershire.

Artist: Wifredo Lam (Cuban, 1902 - 1982). Title: "Composicion". Medium: Mixed media (Gouache, pastel, and crayon) on paper. Date: Composed 1973. Dimensions: Overall size: 16 1/8 x 12 in. (410 x 305 mm).Lot Note(s): Signed and dated, lower right. Tan wove paper. Very good to fine condition. Provenance: Through the artist Max Ernst; Private collection, Vera Cruz, Mexico. Comment(s): Our example undoubtedly removed from a sketchbook. Lam, like many of the most renowned artists of the 20th century, combined radical modern styles with the "primitive" arts of the Americas. While Diego Rivera and Joaquin Torres-Garcia drew inspiration from Pre-Columbian art, Lam was influenced by the Afro-Cubans of the time. He dramatically synthesized Surrealist and Cubist strategies while incorporating the iconography and spirit of Afro-Cuban religion. Image copyright © The Estate of Wifredo Lam. [30170-3-5000]
