During the first quarter of the 20th century she was renowned as a pathbreaker in mural decoration, a field that had been exclusively practiced by men. As a designer for the Ballets Russes under Sergei Diaghilev, Benois exerted what is considered a seminal influence on modern ballet and stage design.

ARTUR MARKOWICZ (1872-1934) Staruszki (Old Women) seated signed 'Markowicz' (lower right), with original Polish exhibition labels on the reversepastel13 1/2 x 17 1/2 in;and three pencil sketches by the artist depicting 'A Rabbi'; 'a Young Girl'; and 'A Young Woman'; four (4) Markowicz studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts, 1886-1895. Later he continued his studies in Munich, returning to Krakow in 1904.
