The surface is uneven in a convex manner mirroring the shape of the backing panel.,
A MINK JACKET, natural dawn pastel shade with point collar and 'puff' sleeves, hook and eye fastening, has label of Higgs Furs, Westcliff / Southend. With it is a valuation on Higgs Furs headed notepaper, dated 1988 which gives replacement value as £1,800. This is together with a beaver lamb coat with 'Tescan' label (2)
VIOLET OAKLEY (1874-1960) Portrait of Maxwell Ashby Armfield (1881-1972) depicted half-length, his chin resting on his right hand, pastel and chalk, signed and dated 1928 lower right, 42cm x 27.5cm Violet Oakley was an American artist, the first American woman to receive a public mural commission. During the first quarter of the 20th century she was renowned as a pathbreaker in mural decoration, a field that had been exclusively practiced by men. •ALEXANDRE NIKOLAYEVICH BENOIS (1870-1960) Two costume designs for Verdi's 'Un Ballo in Maschera' (A Masked Ball) 'Anckarstrom (Renato)', signed and dated 1927, with further pencil inscriptions, watercolour, 21.5cm x 15.75cm and the companion 'Les Conspirateurs' monogrammed and further inscribed in pencil, watercolour, 24cm x 16.5cm; together with a stage design, indistinctly inscribed and dated 1928 in pencil, pastel, 14cm x 21cm (3) Alexandre Benois was a Russian artist, art critic, historian, preservationist, and founding member of Mir iskusstva (World of Art), an art movement and magazine. As a designer for the Ballets Russes under Sergei Diaghilev, Benois exerted what is considered a seminal influence on modern ballet and stage design.
ARTUR MARKOWICZ (1872-1934) Staruszki (Old Women) seated signed 'Markowicz' (lower right), with original Polish exhibition labels on the reversepastel13 1/2 x 17 1/2 in;and three pencil sketches by the artist depicting 'A Rabbi'; 'a Young Girl'; and 'A Young Woman'; four (4) Markowicz studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts, 1886-1895. Later he continued his studies in Munich, returning to Krakow in 1904. In that year he set up a studio in Kazimierz and became well known for his pastel street scenes of the historical Jewish area of Krakow.
