Lot 530

Manner of Sir Anthony van DyckTwo Apostlespastel42 x 43cmBetween 1610 and 1612, Rubens painted a series of 12 apostles that are now in the Prado and they must have inspired his pupil, Van Dyck, to copy the same idea. Van Dyck went overboard and there are dozens of paintings, some in groups, that show the apostles. They are discussed in great detail by Nora de Poorter in the catalogue raisonné published by Yale in 2004. All these are individual heads and none are double portraits like the present pastel. The figures in this pastel are similar to Simon and Jude (Judas Thaddeus) but they are by no means identical. The figure types are very similar, but the poses adjusted, and they are inspired by Van Dyck, but not copied from him.Condition report: 19th century. Small grey spots of foxing throughout. Also some large white spots, possibly mould or damp visible in the darker areas. A pale rubbed patch in the background, top centre, and some paler areas down the righthand edge. Not seen outside of glazed frame.

* PETER HOWSON OBE (SCOTTISH b 1958), IMAGINE pastel on paper, signed 60cm x 45cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: A Howson tribute to John Lennon MBE. John Winston Ono Lennon was an English singer, songwriter, musician and peace activist who achieved worldwide fame as the founder, co-lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist of The Beatles. His songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney remains the most successful in history. On 8th December 1980 Lennon was shot twice in the back and twice in the shoulder at close range by Mark David Chapman at approximately 10.50pm outside the Dakota Apartment Building in New York. At 11.15pm he was pronounced dead. His senseless death was headline news around the world and for many of his generation it was an "everyone remembers where they were when they heard" moment just as it had been when the assassination of US President John F Kennedy shocked the world almost two decades earlier. The day after Lennon's death, his wife, Yoko Ono, made an announcement in which she stated "John loved and prayed for the human race. Please do the same for him".

* SIR NICHOLAS FAIRBAIRN (SCOTTISH 1933 - 1995), LAKE POWELL pastel on paper, signed 23cm x 33cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Label verso: William Hardie Limited, Glasgow. Note 1: Lake Powell is a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River in Utah and Arizona, United States. It is a major vacation spot visited by approximately two million people every year. It is the second largest man-made reservoir by maximum water capacity in the United States behind Lake Mead, storing 24,322,000 acre feet of water when full. Note: Sir Nicholas Fairbairn was a colourful, flamboyant and controversial figure in Scottish legal circles and on the UK political scene during the latter quarter of the 20th century. He was immensely popular among his constituents and was widely respected as a competent and diligent constituency MP. Fairbairn was the epitome of an eccentric in his attitudes, his sartorial style and in most other aspects of his working and personal life. While some disagreed with him, few if any, doubted his intelligence or wit. He was a brilliant QC and was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland in 1979. He always carried a silver miniature, working revolver on a chain attached to his belt. He was reputedly the only MP to use the House of Commons Parliamentary snuff box. Above all, Sir Nicholas Fairbairn was his own man. He amusingly, but typically, described himself in his final entry in Who's Who, as "Author, forester, painter, poet, TV and radio broadcaster, journalist, dress-designer, landscape gardener, bon viveur, raconteur and wit". His autobiography, A Life is Too Short, was published in 1987.

* IAN BOYTER, ST MONANS pastel on paper, signed and dated '73, titled in the mount 25cm x 16cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: Ian Boyter began exhibiting paintings way back in 1974 with a one-man show in the Libra Gallery, St Monans, while he was working as a graphic designer with the National Trust For Scotland. With ancestral roots in Scotland's North-west Highlands and in the East Neuk of Fife, his work is inspired by Scotland's east and west coasts. Ian Boyter trained as a graphic designer and commercial artist at the Heriot Watt College and the Edinburgh College of Art. Based in Edinburgh, he was Chief Designer in the design studio of the National Trust for Scotland for many years, travelled extensively throughout Scotland designing publications and exhibitions and grew to appreciate Scotland's evocative countryside, especially the West Highlands and Islands, the home of his Macdonald ancestors. His love of the East Neuk of Fife comes from Anstruther and Cellardyke where he painted and exhibited and where he also has Boyter family connections. He has exhibited watercolours, acrylics, pastels, collages as well as small sculptures in Edinburgh and in Fife – in galleries, in one-man shows and in group exhibitions. Ian Boyter paintings are in many private collections throughout Scotland and beyond.

Note: Pat Douthwaite was born in Glasgow in 1934. She began to study mime and modern dance with Margaret Morris, whose husband, J. D. Fergusson (Scottish Colourist) encouraged her to paint. This important influence apart, she was self-taught. In 1958 Pat lived in Suffolk with a group of painters, including the Scots Colquhoun and MacBryde, and William Crozier. From 1959-1988 she travelled widely, to N. Africa, India, Peru, Venezuela, Europe, U.S.A., Kashmir, Nepal, Pakistan, Ecuador and from 1969 lived part of the time in Majorca, but more latterly in various properties across the Scottish Borders. She died in July 2002 at Broughty Ferry. Interest in Pat Douthwaite's work has seen a major resurgence in recent years and her work has been strongly promoted by The Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh), generally considered to be Scotland's most prestigious contemporary art gallery.

One man’s passion for over 50 years and now in need of a sympathetic hand to return it to top form.UK-supplied, right-hand drive DHC originally finished in Pastel Blue with Navy Blue leather and a Dark Blue HoodLaycock overdrive and wire wheels from new. Now painted in Triumph Sebring WhiteOwned by the late Harry Neville Harris (and family) since 20/07/1966Last MOT’d in 2005 at 70,034 miles. Large history file, displaying many years of care and enthusiasmA real Barn Find. Whilst complete with resident cobwebs, muck and dust, the car does appear to have been well stored and seems to be a fairly solid basis for restorationWith XK Jaguars remaining as popular as ever, PWT 777 on offer at No Reserve seems an unmissable opportunity.Jaguar Cars launched the XK140 at the London Motor Show in October 1954 with a raft of improvements over its predecessor, the landmark XK120. The styling was enhanced by a revised grille and larger bumpers along with new rear lights, which now incorporated the indicators. The handling was improved by rack and pinion steering and telescopic dampers and the interior space was enlarged to allow the addition of occasional rear seats. The power unit remained Jaguar's well-proven, 3.4-litre, twin-cam six, which now produced 190bhp in standard trim thanks to higher-lift camshafts and revised porting. To ensure reliability, steel bearing caps replaced the previous cast-iron type. A close-ratio gearbox enabled better use to be made of the increased performance whilst a Laycock de Normanville overdrive became an option for the first time. Special Equipment (SE) XK140s came with wire wheels and Lucas fog lamps and could be ordered with an engine developing 210bhp courtesy of a 'C'-type cylinder head. From Jaguar records we can establish that this venerable XK140 DHC was built in right-hand drive on 20/06/1955, finished in Pastel Blue with Navy Blue leather and a Dark Blue Hood. It was fitted with a Laycock overdrive and wire wheels from new and distributed through Appleyards in Leeds before being first registered on 30/06/1955.On offer from a deceased estate, this lovely XK was bought by the late Harry Neville Harris in 1966 (logbook stamped 20/07/1966) and has remained within his family ever since. The most recent MOT is dated 3rd September 2005 with the mileage stated as 70,034 and it’s understood that it was parked up not too long afterwards. At some point in the late eighties, Mr Harris appears to have been researching the history of the car prior to his purchase but without much success. He wrote to a lot of people (correspondence in the file) and a promising communication from the DVLC detailing previous owners is missing the vital page. There is a letter to an Edward Graves from whom Harry appears to have bought the car and the old ‘Buff’ logbook shows that Ralph A Clarke of Lowestoft is registered as the first owner (November 1963) and there is a letter on file from Jaguar to R A Clarke dated July ‘63 so he certainly owned it at that point. An HPI report in January shows just one former keeper before its transfer to Mr Harris's son in 2018, although this would appear to be incorrect. Another part of the mystery is that prior to Harry’s ownership the car was painted Triumph Sebring White, the colour it wears today. With its distinctive registration number (PWT 777) it should be possible to trace the car’s early life and it could be a fun project for its new owner. The substantial History File covers some 55 years with the family and includes rafts of photographs, MOTs, years of invoices, Buff and Green logbooks, Parts List, Wiring diagram, the original Maintenance/Service Handbook and even a fuel ration book which one would assume relates to the Suez crisis. Our vendor is not able to confirm that the Jaguar is a matching numbers car, there may have been an engine swap in the 1980s, and we hope to confirm this, one way or another, however, it seems that the car was finally parked in 2006 due to a clutch issue that would have required engine removal which doesn’t appear to have happened. This is a bit of a ‘Barn Find’, however, whilst complete with resident cobwebs, muck and dust, the car does appear to have been well-stored and seems to be a fairly solid basis for restoration. With XK Jaguars remaining as popular as ever, this original UK RHD project on offer at No Reserve seems an unmissable opportunity. SpecificationMake: JAGUARModel: XK140 DROPHEADYear: 1955Chassis Number: 807181DNTransmission: MANUALEngine Number: G36288Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 71000 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images
