*Nicholson (Winifred, 1893-1981). Bee-Orchids, pastel, approx. 345 x 495 mm (13.5 x 19.5 ins), framed and glazed Winifred Nicholson, the granddaughter of George Howard, Earl of Carlisle and associate of the Pre-Raphaelites, was closely involved with the avant-garde in her early years, having married Ben Nicholson in 1920, and becoming a member of the 7 and 5 Society, where she exhibited between 1926 and 1935, alongside Piper, Moore, Hitchens, Hepworth, Christopher Wood, David Jones, and others. In the 1930s Winifred lived in Paris where she encountered many important modern painters, including Brancusi, Arp, Mondrian, Kandinsky, Giacometti, Calder, etc. Her later work, of which Bee-Orchids is an example, shows her deepening interest in the nature of prismatic colour, and the attempt to "unweave the rainbow".
