Theodore Major (1908-1999), Canal scene with telegraph poles, pastel, 25 x 36.5cm.; 9.75 x 14.5in. * Born in Lancashire, Major's work is often compared stylistically to L. S. Lowry, in particular for his representations of sombre cityscapes and his handling of the human form. His paintings vary from brooding industrial scenes and dark-hued images of the often elongated human figure, to vibrant and brightly coloured pictures of flowers and figures. Major was an intensely private individual, describing painting as his life and art as his religion. His paintings reflect the difficult and uneven life of the artist and John Berger described his work as 'among the best English paintings of our time'.
