THE RAZING OF THE OLD FIRE STATION, TOOTHILL LANE pastel 50 x 50cm Provenance: Christie's South Kensington, 23.1.92., Lot 48 This at first appears to be largely abstract, but closer study reveals that it shows, in Cubist fashion, the artist on the left side, watching as the Fire Station goes up in flames. The title is inscribed at the bottom. Sutton was Principal of Mansfield School of Art and President of the Mansfield Society of Artists. There was a former Fire Station in Toothill Lane, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and the Society had a studio above it. The Fire Station was destroyed in 1970 to make way for a car park.
