Unframed Provenance: From the private collection of author and publisher Colin Smythe Condition Report: No obvious evidence of restoration or repair. A couple of small nicks to the edges of the sheet. Three pin holes to the lower right corner. Glue residue along the upper edge at the two corners, where old tape was once stuck. * ALISON MCGILL (SCOTTISH b. 1974), FADING LIGHT pastel on paper, initialled, titled and dated 2015 labels versomounted, framed and under glassimage size 17cm x 22cm, overall size 34cm x 39cm Artist's label verso. Label verso: The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh.Note: Alison McGill lives and works in Edinburgh and has been a practicing artist since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 1998. Her central subject is the Scottish landscape and shores, which she creates in her distinctive abstract style. As a student, under the tutelage of Victoria Crowe, Alison first experimented in mixing wax and paint to create heavily impastoed textures and painterly surfaces. The mastery of technique in allowing the wax to flow and evolve has been honed and developed over years of practice; excavating and melting the layers of the painting to reveal multiple layers of melded colours, to capture earth contours, rock strata and impressions of the land in its elemental state. In the hands of Alison McGill the landscape moves from real, observed locations to lyrical abstraction. Alison is represented by The Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh).
* PAUL LUCIEN MAZE (ANGLO-FRENCH 1887 - 1979), THE FRENCH GARDEN pastel on paper, singedmounted, framed and under glass image size 26cm x 35cm, overall size 50cm x 60cm Note: Paul Lucien Maze was an Anglo-French painter. He is often known as “The last of the Post Impressionists" and was one of the great artists of his generation. His mediums included oil and watercolour although he was especially acclaimed for his pastels. Maze’s paintings include French maritime scenes, busy New York City scenes and the English countryside as well as Still Life. During the First World War, Maze met Winston Churchill in the trenches and their shared love of painting led to a lifelong friendship. Maze became Churchill's artistic mentor, encouraging him to develop his drawing and painting techniques.
* PETER HOWSON OBE (SCOTTISH b. 1958), SLEEPING WARRIOR pastel on paper, signed framed and under glassimage 101cm x 82cm, overall 115cm x 96cmNote: a very large pastel. Peter Howson pastels are often 60 x 45cm but at 101 x 82cm, "Sleeping Warrior" is slightly more than three times the size.Note 2: Collectors and Howson enthusiasts will be excited by the major retrospective “When the Apple Ripens: Peter Howson at 65" of the work of the artist taking place at the City Arts Centre, Edinburgh and organised by Museums & Galleries Edinburgh from May this year until the beginning of October, bringing together over 100 major works from his early years until the present time. Initial visitor numbers suggest that this exhibition is likely to set new records for a living Scottish artist. The staging of this exhibition during (and beyond) the Edinburgh International Festival reflects the well documented and longstanding international interest in Peter Howson's work.
* ALEXANDER GOUDIE RP RGI (SCOTTISH 1933 - 2004), STUDY OF A BOAT pastel on paper, signedmounted, framed and under glassimage size 60cm x 50cm, overall size 88cm x 74cmNote: Alexander Goudie was born in 1933 at Paisley and, as a child, showed prodigious talent for drawing. He studied at Glasgow School of Art when William Armour was head of drawing and painting and David Donaldson was the ubiquitous influence. Goudie, as a student at Glasgow, demonstrated his extraordinary ability. He received the Somerville Shanks Prize for Composition and, later, his draughtsmanship and sense of colour was recognized with the award of the Newbery Medal. As a young artist he grew up admiring three great masters, Sir John Lavery, George Henry and James Guthrie; all artists who had bridged the gap between Glasgow and Paris. It was these artists’ glorious virtuoso control of oil paint that appealed to Goudie, as well as their genre and realist subject-matter. Alexander Goudie was elected a member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1956 and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1970. He painted a portrait of the Queen for the Caledonian Club, London (1992/93), and exhibited widely, showing at Harari and Johns, in London, the Fine Art Society, Glasgow, and the Musee de la Faience, in Quimper. Sir Timothy Clifford, former Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, wrote: ''At his best, Goudie could draw better than any of his rivals in Scotland. There was magic and vision in his art and, I expect, history will be kind to him.'' Collections: 79 of Goudie's paintings are held in UK public collections including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Rozelle House Galleries, Paisley Museum & Art Galleries and The Fleming Collection (London). Numerous prestigious corporate collections in the UK and France and in private collections around the world.
