(35 x 50.2cm.) * Condition: Paper and mount cockled to upper right corner. Some dirt beneath glass in places - would benefit from removal from frame to clean the glass. Minor foxing to mount.
Tony Allain (British, b.1949), Gondolas on a Venetian backwater pastel on tinted paper, signed and dated (19)96 lower left 14 x 19¾in. (35.5 x 50.2cm.) * Condition: Good condition. Paper very slightly cockled. Some dirt beneath glass - would benefit from removal from frame so glass can be cleaned.
Gerald Palmer (Jersey, 1935-2017), Corbière, Jersey watercolour, signed lower right 13½ x 19½in. (34.3 x 49.5cm.) * Notes: Jersey landscape painter known mainly for his views of Island scenery in oils and pastels, although worked in most mediums. Educated at Victoria College he graduated from Portsmouth College of Art in 1956 taking up a position on Fleet Street as an editorial illustrator. He worked for the Hilton Press and on various publications including comics such as Dan Dare. He returned to Jersey in 1962 as a freelance illustrator and found success as a painter. The strong demand for his views of Island scenery enabled him to give up commercial work and he was able to devote more time to sculpture. He was a member of the Pastel Society and an Associate Member of the Guild of Aviation Artists. His work has been exhibited and published widely. He died in 2017. * Condition: Good condition with no faults.
E. Anthony Orme (British, b.1945), "Quiet Waters, Venice": "Gondola on a Venetian Backwater" a pair, pastel, both signed 'E Anthony Orme' lower right, inscribed verso 25½ x 11¼in. (64.75 x 28.5cm.). (2) * Condition: In foliate carved, cream painted frames. Minor losses. Pastels very good with no faults - glazed behind matted UV reflective glass.
Maurice Randall (British, 1865-1950), Portrait of a young girl in her Sunday best oval, pastel, signed lower left, in original gilt and composition frame 33¼ x 26¼in. (84.5 x 66.7cm.) * Condition: Some grey mould spotting to surface of paper around margin to top half. Two mould spots to lower left of girl's face. Rubbing/damage to surface of pastel to left hand ringlet of girl's hair. Frame has had extensive repairs and repainting.
Possibly American School (early 20th century), "On the Hudson" pastel, inscribed "On the Hudson" verso 11¾ x 17¾in. (30 x 45cm.); together with another similar work, Moorland Scene, pastel, 9½ x 17¾in. (24 x 45cm.). (2) * Condition: 'On the Hudson' - has loss top centre. The other in good condition.
Paul Lucien Maze (French, 1887-1979), East Sussex village street scene pastel on tinted paper, signed lower right and also verso, dated verso 1949 (?), indistinct further inscription verso 16 x 12 5/8in. (40.6 x 32cm.) * Paul Maze is known as the last of the post-impressionists. He was taught to paint initially by Pissarro, a family friend and would sketch on the beach at Le Havre with Raoul, also a friend of his family. He met Sir Winston Churchill during WW1 and became a life-long and close friend. Regularly advising Churchill on his own artwork, they corresponded often, particularly in the 1930s. Indeed, it was Churchill who wrote the forward for "A Frenchman in khaki", Paul Maze's memoirs, who though French was a non-commissioned liaison officer with the British Expeditionary force, often sketching enemy positions in night time forays into no-man's land. His art can be found at the Tate gallery and in private collections, including Churchill's descendants.
