LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY FRENCH SCHOOL - four pastel portraits: a young woman wearing a coral necklace, a young man wearing a white cravat and dark blue coat, an older lady wearing a Kashmir shawl and lace head dress and an older gentleman wearing a dark blue jacket, all on paper and unframed, 53.5cms x 45cms Provenance: Possibly by Jean Baptiste Augustin, the family were originally from France and had connections with this artist, however no signature appears on these works and there is no definitive proof in any of the family papers available.
Nancy Sheppard (nee Huntly, b.1890) 'FAITH AGED 4' Signed, inscribed in ink on label verso, 'Hung in Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 1925', also with Pastel Society typed label, pastel, 35 x 25cm. Exhibited: Royal Academy, 1925 Faith's hand-written notebook recalls that in the Royal Society of Portrait Painters the picture was exhibited in the 'Paris Salon under the title of 'Avril', because she cried and cried while sitting for it, so my mother felt it wasn't me, but a tearful little girl possibly called Avril (April showers)'. After the picture's return, the frame damaged, Faith writes 'My mother didn't care to show in Paris anymore, she thought fees too expensive'.
