Rebecca Hardaker Appreciate me no.1, 2023 Watercolour pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Verity Babbs About Rebecca Hardaker's practice is an intersection between painting and drawing. Executed with an unabashed fondness for innocence, each canvas is an ensemble of abstract mark making and figures. Rebecca often never has a plan when she starts a new painting. One mark provokes another and so gives birth to a landscape of abstraction. She moves around the canvas, filling it with painterly strokes and line. The process is fast and intuitive, unencumbered by rules. Her palette is bright and dreamy. Just as she never sets out a plan, Rebecca doesn't cancel out mistakes. These are part of the composition, which is the artist's immediate translation of her cerebral vision giving way for to whimsical uncertainty. Tsarouchis1Inspired by Jan Vermeer's Love letter, c. 1669-1670 (Ritzmuseum, Amsterdam), this captivating work features Dominique, Tsarouchis's most characteristic sitter. 'The model I chose was a youngster from Chartres, Dominique, who showed skills in painting, poetry and music. At that time [1973], I was engrossed in that new type of youth with long hair and clothes usually bought in flea markets, embodying the traditional French with a touch of revolution.'2 As noted by A. Szymczyk who co-cutated the artist's 2021 retrospective in Chicago, 'the negotiation and transgression of limits between art and the everyday were central to Tsarouchis's work and philosophy. Many of his later works enter into erudite dialogue with the old masters revered and studied by Tsarouchis. Appropriating compositional schemes from Vermeer van Delft and other Dutch Golden Age painters (The letter, The painter and the model) or portraying himself copying Titian, Tsarouchis ignored artistic fashions of his day, keeping at a distance from his contemporaries and instead creating a world of thoughts, emotions, and imagery that was unmistakably his own. He dodged expectations and was a true postmodern artist avant la lettre, constantly brushing up against the grain of his time, fully aware of the fact that his work would only be appreciated in the future.'3 1 Yannis Tsarouchis Painting, Comments [in Greek], Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation, Athens 1990, p. viii.2 Y. Charles Buchel,  British 1872-1950- Portrait of a lady in profile, bust-length, wearing a beaded necklace; charcoal and pastel heightened with scratching out on paper, signed and dated 'CHAS . A . BUCHEL / 1907' (lower left), 42.2 x 31.8 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Buchel studied at the Royal Academy Schools, before being hired by the actor-manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree (1852-1917), with whom he worked for sixteen years, in 1898. In this role, Buchel produced a number of theatrical programmes and posters, alongside painting portraits of some of the most important performers of the day, including Lillie Langtry (1853-1929) and Henry Irving (1838-1905).  The present work is a striking example of Buchel's highly sensitive portraits, powerfully conveying a sense of a the sitter's character and presence, whilst also suggesting that her attention is elsewhere, as she gazes absent-mindedly away from the viewer.

Lot 74

Follower of Maurice-Quentin de la Tour,  French 1704-1788- Portrait of Marie Leczinska, Queen of France, seated half-length; oil on canvas, bears old inscribed label 'Marie Leckzynska / Reine de France et de / Navarre' verso, bears later inscription 'FROM HENGRAVE HALL / SUFFOLK' on the upper horizontal stretcher bar, 81 X 65 cm., (unframed). Provenance:  Private Collection, Warsaw.  Hengrave Hall, Suffolk (according to an inscription on the reverse of the stretcher).  Private Collection, UK. Note:  De la Tour was a prominent pastellist of the French Rococo, producing portraits of some of the most significant figures of the 18th-century Age of Enlightenment, including Voltaire (1694-1778), Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), and Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778). He also depicted Louis XV (1710-1774) and his wife, Marie Leczinska (1703-1768), both now held in the collection of the Louvre [no.27618 and no.27618]. The present work clearly draws heavily on de la Tour's original 1748 pastel of Marie Leczinska, although it reverses the composition and depicts the sitter in a cloak of ermine and blue velvet, embroidered with fleur-de-lis, definitively asserting her identity. Marie Leczinska was immensely popular as Queen of France, known for her piety and philanthropy. She was also Queen for over 42 years, making her the longest-serving Queen in French history.
