Finely woven cream wool shawl, European, probably English, 19th century, 56in. x 55in. 142cm. x 140cm. Woven with sprays of flowers in a pastel palette, within a border of conjoined floral diamond motifs, the shawl now conserved onto an indigo cotton ground. Some surface marks; some wear with small repairs; shattering in some places.
A German tazza, the shaped milk glass dished top with pale blue pastel shaded frosted glass, highlighted with painted and gilt floral and foliate sprays, the base decorated with mythological animal masks and with foliate scrolls, on a circular foot, detailed 800 Wt B, 31cm across x 20cm high. Oliver Messel, Caesar on midnight stroll discovers the Sphinx, circa 1945, pastel on board, 80cm x 57.5cm, signed lower left This work is believed to have been executed for promotional artwork for Gabriel Pascal's production of George Bernard Shaw's 'Caesar and Cleopatra', released in 1945, and featuring Vivien Leigh and Claude Rains. Oliver Messel is known to have worked on the production of the film. The work is accompanied with a volume of 'Meeting at the Sphinx', Marjorie Deans, where a screen still from the film illustrates a near identical scene as the work offered.
