Oliver Messel, Caesar on midnight stroll discovers the Sphinx, circa 1945, pastel on board, 80cm x 57.5cm, signed lower left This work is believed to have been executed for promotional artwork for Gabriel Pascal's production of George Bernard Shaw's 'Caesar and Cleopatra', released in 1945, and featuring Vivien Leigh and Claude Rains. Oliver Messel is known to have worked on the production of the film. The work is accompanied with a volume of 'Meeting at the Sphinx', Marjorie Deans, where a screen still from the film illustrates a near identical scene as the work offered.
