He was killed in an aeroplane accident with HRH the Duke of Kent on the 25th of August 1942. John Lowther was his Private Secretary. Provenance The Hon. William Lowther bought the Campsea Ashe High House Estate in 1883 and where the family lived until the death of his son James William Lowther, Speaker of the House of Commons 1905-1921, 1st Viscount Ullswater, in 1949. Maurice Clarke ( British b. 1875) Three quarter length portrait of an attractive young lady with ribbon tied chestnut hair, wearing a lace trimmed white gown, seated in an open armchair. Pastel, highlighted with white. Signed and dated April 1917 lower right, 76 x 59cm. Artists label verso, identifying the sitter as Monica Bell. There was little known about her early life but Monica joined the army in her twenties commissioned in the WRAC. By the end of the war she was a Colonel and served in Cairo for five years. After the war she returned to the UK and lived in Pluckley, near Ashford in Kent
