Michael Wickham (1909-1995), a Cubist-style still life pastel study of fruits in bowls etc., the table with a figure looking on, framed and glazed (58cm x 41cm) Lot 540 is signed by the Artist. The vendor states that this and Lot 541 are also by Michael Wickham as they brought them as Wickhams and two of the paintings exhibit a photocopy newspaper editorial verso pertaining to Michael Wickham.

Historic Guernsey interest - the silver medal awarded to William John Caparne by the British Iris Society, the 'Foster Memorial Plaque' medal in sterling silver, hallmarked by Toye & Co., London 1936, one side cast in bas relief with an oval portrait of Sir Michael Foster, within a bed of irises, a banner above inscribed 'In Memory Sir Michael Foster 1836-1907', the reverse inscribed 'AWARDED TO W.J.CAPARNE 1936', 3½ x 2in. (8.9 x 5.1cm.), in the original fitted morocco case, weight 6.55 tr.oz. * As well as a talented painter in watercolour and pastel, although tragically little recognised in his lifetime, Caparne was in fact very much better known for his knowledge and expertise in Bearded Irises, cultivating over 200 new hybrids during his years in Guernsey and being elected a fellow of the RHS in 1899. His cultivars were grown across the globe and he was a well known name amongst nurserymen and botanists in the UK, Europe, the Americas and Australasia. The British Iris Society recognised his significant contributions with the award of the Foster Memorial Plaque in 1936, just four years before his death in Jan. 1940.

Norman Stansfield Cornish MBE (1919-2014) ''Pit Road with Colliery, Winter'' Signed, inscribed verso, pastel, 60cm by 71cm Provenance: Gifted to the vendor's father by the artist The Pit Road is one of Norman Cornish's most iconic images. He made this journey almost every day for over 30 years from his front door in Bishops Close Street, Spennymoor to Dean and Chapter Colliery three miles away at Ferryhill. At the end of a shift underground the return journey was made in all weathers and at different times of the night and day.
