* Paul Lucien Maze (French, 1887-1979), Study of Jessie, the Artist`s Wife, signed lower right "P Maze", pastel, 52 x 74cm (20 x 29in). In 1950 Maze married Jessie and they moved to Treyford in Sussex. He often said that "Painting was about being in love" and his wife, a Highland beauty with flowing red hair, was both his muse and the subject of the `Jessie Pictures`, considered to be some of his finest work. Jessie reigned with a calm serenity over the secluded world which they shared with three King Charles`s spaniels and two cats, also the subject of many pictures. Maze believed that "Painters are born, not made" and "The greatest teacher is nature", so it was perhaps to be expected that it was in Sussex that he developed an affection for drawing landscapes and rural scenes.
* Paul Lucien Maze (French, 1887-1979), Manhattan Skyline, signed lower left "Paul Maze", pastel, 20 x 11cm (8 x 4in). Paul Maze was born in 1887 and brought up at Le Havre in a cultured family who were friends of prominent artists and writers. As a boy he would watch Pisarro at work and sketched with Dufy on the beach. Early in life he decided to be a painter and became a close friend of Segonzac and Vuillard in Paris in the 20s. Meanwhile he had served with distinction in the Great War and met Winston Churchill in the trenches with whom he frequently painted and whom became a life-long friend. Churchill wrote the foreword to Paul Maze`s book "A Frenchman in Khaki" about his unique experiences on the Western Front, which included being nearly shot by the British as a suspected spy owing to mistaken identity. Always an Anglophile he came to live in Britain after the Great War and married the widow of a friend killed in France. His talent both for painting and friendship brought him a host of admirers. His work can be seen in many important international Exhibitions, and major galleries including Tate Britain, the Fitzwilliam and private collections worldwide.
