(F)Walking half-nude, pastel chalk on brown paper, 160 cm x 100 cm frame interior, signed, dated 16.6.88, pinholes at the edges, partially wavy

Lot 67

(F)Male nude with undergarment, pastel chalk and drawing on paper, 150 cm x 65 cm, inner frame dimensions, monogrammed, 74 dated, pinholes at the edges, partially slightly wavy. The painter, graphic artist and stage designer Johannes Grütze (1937 - 2017) was concerned with social and political relevance. He was concerned with discrepancies and tensions that open up the theme of "being human" in this connection that is as provocative as it is stringent. From 1957 to 1964 he attended the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin, where he became a master student of Peter Janssen, and took part in the International Summer Academy in Salzburg, which was directed by Oskar Kokoschka. In 1973 he founded the "School of New Magnificence" with fellow artists and in 1991 set a milestone in his oeuvre with his mural "Zug der Volksvertreter" in Frankfurt's Paulskirche. Both pastel drawings, offered in two successive lots, belong to the period between these two important events in his artistic life and show a nude. The one from 1988 in a stepping motion, the other from 1974 standing firmly on the ground: with vibrating strokes, not only the legs of the striding forward are painted, but also the open spaces, the air around the legs, seems completely charged with green, white, reddish energy. The second nude appears masculine and yet wears a feminine petticoat with a flounce, which is pulled upwards with the right hand so that the abdomen is exposed. On both feet, the nude stands, firmly on the ground, legs tense, drawing the body line further upwards out of the picture through the raised arm. The eye follows the physique in both moments in an almost theatrical manner of a dancer. A play of opposites is evident in these drawings - movement and stillness - permeated by themes of (to this day) socio-political relevance in a stage-like form.

Lot 89

Heinz Mack (1931 Lollar) (F)prima vera 2', pastel chalk on handmade paper, 62 cm x 48 cm sheet dimension, signed, 77 dated, titled, mounted, slightly wavy. The central question of the ZERO group, which consisted of Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker, is that of art itself. Is art only meant to be depicted? It is precisely this question that must be overcome! The aforementioned artists have thus done revolutionary work that continues to reverberate in contemporary art to this day.Mack follows the principle of "taking one element and then putting it into a structure of rhythm and repetition. These repetitions all have their own sensibility and significance to the overall structure of the work." The laws of nature follow similar principles, for the day-night rhythm or the seasons also recur. Life is guided by them. Heinz Mack is very concerned with how art and nature are directly connected. As an artist, he strives to overcome traditional painting by working out the intensity of light and space. He manages to concentrate precisely this emerging energy in a specific place and, for example, to transform a colour field into a field of tension. The depiction of spring with its colourful nature is a popular subject that can be found in every art epoch. Mack translates it into small-format colour chromatics so that it begins to vibrate with colourful energy. In 1977, "Primavera 2", a vertically constructed colour gradient of prism-like blues, greens and yellows, was painted in pastel chalk on handmade paper. From cobalt blue to pleasing citrus yellow, Mack unleashes a fascinating range of colours. Spring's fresh colours are created in the vegetation by the sunlight that awakens the flora after the long dark winter. The colour gradient not only looks like a colour field refracted by light, but is almost reminiscent of Igor Stravinsky's musical masterpiece "Le sacre du printemps".
