* JESSIE M MCGEEHAN (SCOTTISH 1872 - 1950), THE CROFTER'S DAUGHTER pastel on paper, signed 35.5cm x 24cm Mounted, framed and under glass Note: Jessie Mary McGeehan was born on 24 August 1872. After leaving Glasgow School of Art in 1895 she continued her studies in Paris. This is borne out by an article in the Scots Pictorial, 27 September 1919 and the fact that by 1897 she exhibited paintings entitled Un Bon Coin and Flower Sellers, Paris, at the Exhibition of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts (RGI). From 1892 she had been exhibiting both oil and water colours at the RGI, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. In 1901 her work was shown at the Royal Academy, London. From 1897 Jessie had a studio of her own at 134 Bath Street, Glasgow, and by 1903 her work was being noticed beyond Glasgow. She appears to have also spent some time painting in Holland as many of her paintings, exhibited from 1906 to 1913 featured Dutch subjects. The following article from the Scots Pictorial gives us some idea of Jessie's place in the art world by 1919: Jessie McGeehan - 'One of our youngest Painters whose work has earned for her a high place among British Artists. Trained at the Glasgow School of Art, and in Paris, where she enjoyed the friendship of some of the greatest painters and sculptors of the age, she has added to this training by travel and an exhaustive study of the treasures in the great European galleries. Miss McGeehan contributes to the Royal Academy and other important art exhibitions.
MARC CHAGALL (RUSSIAN-FRENCH 1887-1985) Les Amoureux , gouache, watercolor, pastel and pencil on paper 76.5 x 56.8 cm (30 1/8 x 22 3/8 in.) stamped with signature Marc Chagall lower left PROVENANCE Estate of the artist Christie`s, New York, May 7, 2008, Lot 129 Acquired at the above sale by the present owner EXPERTISE The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the Comite Chagall. A copy of the certificate is available upon request. LOT NOTES Marc Chagall and his beloved wife Bella traveled the Mediterranean and South France during the spring of 1926. As this was his first time seeing the sea, the artist was deeply impressed by such different surroundings that influenced both his personality and style of painting. The bright light, the crisp colors of the water confronting rich tones of trees and exotic flowers, and, most importantly, the lovers - these are the main features of Chagall`s works executed in the Southern France. Even though the present lot was created decades after that determinant trip, the vibrant tone of artist`s fresh impression and almost naive fascination still lingers in colors and trickles through shapes.
